of the workspace, shortcut key assignments, syntax highlighting color
choices.

It's extensible. You can add ftp open/save, text auto completion, HTML
Tidy, and many, many other plug-ins.

It's well documented and supported pretty well through the jEdit
community pages. Documentation actually exceeds the standards of many
more expensive editors.

The price is right. Free.

It's cross platform. I get the same user experience on the Windows box
at work that I get on the Mac/Linux boxen at home.

Multi-language support. Through the use of plug ins you can extend to
program in just about any language you might commonly encounter. It
actually doubles as a Java IDE.

I have a similar problem to the poster that spawned the original thread,
except i'm on a man.

i'm doing more web stuff, but i'm finding dreamweaver to be major
overkill and incredibly slow. At this point, i'm using bbedit and old
versions of stylemaster and layout master to do html/css.

Can anyone recommend any make tools for doing php/mysql work?

First, note well that there are people who do not run Windows (some have
chosen an Apple Macintosh with Mac OS, others PC hardware with other
operating systems).

That said, I am not running Windows here, however, my HTML editor is GNU
Emacs with a modified version of Nelson Minar's html-helper-mode (there is
also a css-mode for CSS from a different author). There is a Microsoft
Windows port of Emacs, or at least was as of a few months ago (it may lag
behind the most current source release of Emacs by a version or two
depending).
