Your color scheme is ... bizarre. It dominates the page rather than
enhances the content. The content is then further muted in dull gray.

Hmmm, thanks for the info I have done some more work on the colour
scheme and it looks better now I think.

Yes, it is better balanced. The content contrast is still rather low.

Hmmm, thanks Jim, what do other people think about this? and the new
design in general.

Concerning your color scheme: you seem to have problems finding harmonic
colors. It seems as if you are only working with fully saturaded colors.
There are various simple excersises to train your feeling for colors.
One is to reduce the amount of used colors: try once to restrict
yourself to only two colors: blue and white for instance. Try to play
with the saturation of the both colors. It takes time, and it takes a
lot of practice to develop a proper feeling for the use of colors.

I hope that this is not to suggest that saturated colors are not capable of being
harmonic. This analogous color scheme, for instance, is harmonic.

The page in question is a blue with purple, neighbors on the color wheel,
a classic analogous scheme.

The other 'colors' on the page, black and white, are completely
neutral and do not affect the harmony of the other colors.

What may actually be offending you is the loudness (saturation) of the colors.
The crime of this depends on the aesthetic, if any, being adhered to and the
intent of the work.
The German expressionists, for instance, used such schemes commonly.

As a note, google up something like website similar colour match and
you should find a website that can come up with a scheme for you.
