Why do you need that? There is _nothing_ there except some silly banner exchange
banner and a useless counter. What's there to count? The hits you get from this
post of yours. Well, congrats with a day of some increase in activity.

what's wrong barbara? It was more than an exchange banner page. Haven't
you noticed the 'enter' sign? I assumed the guy was really asking for a
critique on his site about wooden signs... (or is alt.html.critique
restricted to non-commercial websites only? If so, then I would consider
his business as quite small and why not giving him a crit?)

Appearently not. I don't load images. If the big, unclickable, empty square in
the middle of the page, without an [alt] text was an entry sign, it was
unnoticable to me and many others, amongst whome also for example Google.
Looking at the code didn't give a clue either. I saw the big empty square was a
map, but there was no alternative to enter the site.

So, like I said, there is _nothing_ there, for me and many others.

Google will follow links regardless of alt text on an image, in fact
Google ignores alt content on images except for their image search
service.

Google will follow links regardless of alt text on an image,
In the code I see:
<map name="homesigns">
<area shape="rect"coords="240,210,530,270"
href="en/housesigns.html">
</map>
<img src="background2.jpg"
border="0" width="750" height="400"
alt="" usemap="#homesigns">

I suppose href="en/housesigns.html" is the entry to the real content? I guess
Google notices. It has a bot that presumably doesn't make mistakes.
I'm not a bot. For me, without images, that link is well hidden. The first time
I looked at the code, I didn't notice it.

Anyway, being a visitor and all, I shouldn't have to look at the code at all
just to find my way in.

yes, and as ordinary visitors usually have left their UAs wiht their
default settings they would have noticed the 'enter' sign...

It is not at all unusual to switch off the auto-load of images. Many people are
either on dial-up and don't want to wait ages for a page to load because of a
large image, or still pay per amount of data-transfer and don't want
unnecessary, large images to load.

Well you're using Opera, that's not standard for dial-up people.
And swichting off images, then you need to have good knowlage of what you
computer can do with internet.
That's very uncommon with people that only have a dail-up internet
connection.

Many people are either on dial-up..
70% of the Dutch people have Broadband or Cable Internet (at home or at work
for their personal use).
It's not so that the other 30% also has internet, but only via a dail-up.
That's only a very small proporsion.

You don;t have to defend your choice of not seeing images.
But it's smart to tell the people what browser settings you are using when
you reviewing their page.

I don't see how this is relevant to alt.html.critique. This group is not in the
nl.* hierarchy. It is a world wide group.
