Default Website critique please - 04-25-2004 , 12:26 PM

I've been trying to unlearn bad habits and write good HTML/CSS. The
result is at http://www.cyberus.ca/~kirstyh/ I would very much value
your criticism of it.

Thanks.

(PS I've been messing about with different layouts and stylesheets so it
has some Alternative Stylesheets associated with it. I know that some
of them aren't really very good and that there are some issues with them
in IE).

There are issues when the browser window is reduced in width:

Opera also does something peculiar with your photo and the Union Flag.

Looks like the Opera <img> padding/border bug. This only appears in
7.21-7.23. Earler versions are fine and previews of 7.5 are fine too. Not
something to worry about too much.

Quite an attractive first page; perhaps the resume page could be based
on that to provide a common 'look-and-feel'?

Anyway. Just a few initial observations.

(1) I am not sure why you have a UK flag on the first page. As the page
is in English already, it would seem to be a redundant link.

Perhaps it would be better to remove it, along with the 'Welcome' link
-- which seems to point to 'itself'.

(2) The layout has problems when the text size is increased:
http://www.gododdin.demon.co.uk/ng/K2.JPG (75k)

(3)
You have a list of 3 links on the page:
* Skip to end of links
* Welcome!
* Resume

You have styled 'Skip to end of links' as 'display:none:

This will hide it from the majority of screen-readers and talking
browsers -- which may be just the opposite to what you had intended ;-)

See:
http://www.gododdin.demon.co.uk/ng/K1.JPG (48k)

If you want to hide it from graphical browsers, but make it available to
screen-readers, you might want to consider using a 1-pixel .gif image as
the link, with the 'alternative text' set accordingly.

(4) Putting it through the w3c validator, it returns:
"This page is not Valid HTML 4.01 Transitional!"
(still, there are just two errors -- on the Javascript code)

As it's a new page, perhaps you might also consider validating it to
'4.01 strict'.

(5) Consider changing the all-numeric date to ISO 8601 for the benefit
of the international audience ;-) ............ YYYY-MM-DD

regards.

Other than downloading the files, is there a way you can view the page with
the alternative CSS files?

Looks OK, except when I opened your page with a small browser window the
content was obscured by the left column.

Mozilla:

View > Use Style

Alternative stylesheets should use rel="alternate stylesheet", not
rel="alternative stylesheet". I think the second one works in Mozilla but
it's non-standard and won't work in other browsers.

Do you have any reason to use a Transitional doctype? It looks to me that
you could quite happily switch to Strict and enjoy a more rigorous
approach to validation.

Add some <body> padding to the resume. The text goes too far to the edge.
