Default Violin/Viola FAQ: need redesign - 07-25-2006 , 11:03 AM

I cross-posted this and it didn't work, so I'm gong to try again.

I have a FAQ at http://www.geocities.com/conniesunday/ which has become
unwieldy and unmanageable. If anyone knows of a better model for a
FAQ, or has other design ideas, could you share those?

I only know html, and not CSS, nor do I have any design software.

Thanks!

Cross-posting would work nicely if you used a real news client and a
news service instead of GG.

Well, since you are stuck with - or using - 1995 HTML style coding, and
don't want to take the time to learn CSS, why not just leave the FAQ
page as is. At least it does the job. I don't see any reason to rewrite
it unless you want to spend the time to learn the proper new
technologies.

Probably if I saw a model of something in the "proper new
technologies," I might start learning them. After all, that's how I
learned my circa 1995 html codes: by copying other people's codes -
and asking a million questions.

So my question stands: if anyone knows of a FAQ organized beautifully,
please let me know. I need to reorganize mine in some fashion.

Thanks

I think the problem you're FAQ is having is an organizational one. I'd
try to subdivide the categories further in particular the
"learning/technique" section. You may want to consider organizing the
content by level of expertise (which you're really close to already) -
ie. Novice, Amateur, Expert sorta thing. I guess in summary the problem
I have is getting to the information - I don't like to read through
lots of lists, but headers are more tolerable. Just be sure you don't
fall into the trap alot of companies do with the FAQ - that being it
becomes more of a "Frequently Answered Marketing Talking Points" You
have good information (though a couple of apparant dead link - yikes).
Perhaps a little humor could go a little further (what's the difference
between a viola and violin - the viola burns longer) sorry.

Don't worry about the code nazis, concentrate on getting the content
concise.

Thank you for responding to this. I ended up doing as you suggest,
dividing it up, but in the following fashion:

VIOLIN/VIOLA FAQ
http://www.geocities.com/conniesunday/FAQ.html

Learning & Techniques:

How to locate teachers and violin shops
How to teach yourself the violin
Am I too old to learn the violin, which has always been my dream?
Since I am left-handed, can I learn to play and have a violin fitted
for playing in the opposite way?
Can you give me some advice about how to play the "wiggly thing," i.e.,
vibrato?
What is the distinction between "weight" and "pressure" with respect to
playing double (and triple) stops?
What is best approach to producing smooth bow strokes?
What technical routine do you use to stay in shape?
How can I develop a private teaching studio?
What is the usual progression of violin études?
What is the best way to achieve good intonation in string playing?
At what stage in students' development do they begin vibrato and
shifting?
Should a teacher who is primarily a violinist teach viola?
What are some of the techniques teachers use to approach beginning
students?
How can I get my child to practice?
Why we play.
I have been playing for some time but my technique is not very good.
What is your recommendation?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Violin Care & Specs:
Issues regarding purchase of starter instruments.
Requests to appraise an instrument
Are the violin and the fiddle the same instrument?
What's the difference between the violin and the viola?
How can I determine if this violin is the right size for my
daughter/son?
What is the best way to protect the violin from extremes of temperature
and humidity?
How can I determine the size of a violin (4/4, 3/4, etc.) if the label
on the inside is missing? (and other violin measurements)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Auditions & Gigs:
What is the best way to avoid being nervous at a jury or an audition?
How do I break into the music business (i.e., get gigs?)
How can I recover if I lose an audition?
What is involved in developing a press kit?

Try this link checker from the W3C, it will trawl through your site and
pick out dead links:
