Validation performs various automated checks to see if the markup follows
the standard (it isn't the be all and end all - a spell check will tell you
if all the words are real words, it won't tell you if you've used them
properly).

If it doesn't conform to the standard then browsers have to perform error
recovery. Different browsers will try to correct for your errors in
different ways. Not all will recover in a good way.
