Although there are no right/wrong answers to these questions, I would
like to gauge an opinion of the users here:

What is the default font and font-size YOU currently use?

Has this font or font-size changed? Recently? When? Why did you change?

What percentage of all users know how to change their default font and
font-size? (guesstimate) What percentage of all users use something
other than the browser defaults? (guesstimate)

When you create a web page, what font and font-size do you expect the
majority of your users to have? or do you expect the majority of the
users will have their settings as is when their browser is first installed?

What are the 'default' font and font-size settings for browsers?

I'll respond to my own questions:

Times New Roman 14

Has this font or font-size changed? Recently? When? Why did you change?

Recently increased size from 12pt because web sites I frequent were
making their text smaller and smaller. I am not getting any younger
either, and spend a lot of time at the computer so the larger font helps
to ease eye strain.

I would guess the majority of users have their settings left as-was when
they installed their browser.

users will have their settings as is when their browser is first installed?

I guess that most Windoze users will have the default font set installed
and have not changed the browser setting from their installation
settings. I guess that other OS users (who might be a bit more computer
savvy (?)) have installed at least the most common fonts (Times, Arial
etc.) and may be using defaults other than what is set as their browser
is installed.

I don't know! I have played with all my browsers so much that I cannot
recall what the installation default settings are!

I expect users to have their default size set at whatever they are
most comfortable reading.

This really isn't the right newsgroup for this type of query, unless
you've got some web page to go along with it. Then we'd critique it, of
course. I'll answer your questions anyway and hopefully you'll see

It just doesn't matter. I doubt anyone else uses exactly the same
settings. I'll just mention that the size is larger than the factory
default and, on my monitor, I prefer a sans-serif to a serif font, but
it really depends on the font. Arial is butt ugly, as is Times.

I changed years ago when I got my first high-res monitor and found most
web sites to be unreadable. It was then I discovered accessibility and
the joys of font-size:100%.

I can pull a number out of the air as well as anyone else, so I'll just
say: 93.8% and 64.7%, respectively.

Note that I did make sure the second number was smaller than the first.
It might be illogical otherwise.

I expect the user to have whatever is comfortable for them. I imagine a
lot of times they find the factory defaults are good enough.

Depends on the browser. You can install a bunch of browsers and check
them out yourself, if you really want to know.

Users do all kinds of extraordinary things without being aware that they
are doing them, and then deny having done them.

that vital.

You can't prodict anything on the web, for one some people don't even
use a screen, so font-size is best left at the default for the users
browser, if infact the user is useing a font at all. The best choice
of font is to have a range of common fonts, such as arial, and a few
other fall back fonts, in case a user does not have a font that is
near what you have specified.
