Default site - 06-05-2005 , 03:48 PM

hi,

a friend of mine has had a site built for him. he owns an successful
electrical installations business.

i was going to offer to do one for him but he must have been already making
enquiries of his own. now he has had one built elsewhere.

i fee the site he has had made does not portray a professional image of his
business.

I feel bad about saying anything to him because it will seem like I am
jealous or something

I am not a pro web developer but if a site of mine dont look professional I
keep at it until it does.

what do you guys think?

the things that I feel are particularly unprofessional are the music, the
star wars flash and the ninja / assassin.

www.cardiffpower.com

for those that did not read the text above - this is not one of mine!

Yes if you pay someone accordingly.

Yes it's unprofessional.
But that depends also how much he pay for such things($3?).

Have a nice day.

All I get is a blank page with "flash required" and "enter", so I
click "enter", and get another page with "flash required" and "home".
Clicking "home" leads to the page I'm already on.

Nope, doesn't look professional to me :-)

The site is awful in several ways, many visitors do not have flash, or have
flash disabled
including the search engine spiders, there is almost nothing for a spider to
index so the site will
be buried in the search engines.

with flash enabled, it is slow, the animation looks to be done by an amateur
and the music will
drive customers away.

there is an address and phone number but no information about service area,
services or
products provided.

the site does not answer the most important question

What's In It For Me (WIIFM)

why should I use the service or product promoted by this site ?

Oh, I do hate having to scroll left-to-right to read the blocks of text
on the Certificates page! I am using a screen resolution of 800x600 and
don't want to change that.

And in Firefox, the background color does not extend all the way down to
the bottom of the screen.

And in IE, I don't have Active X enabled so, on each page, I get the
pop-up warning message telling me the page may not then display correctly.

Also, I haven't a clue what the whole site is about! The home page
tells me nothing that helps.

There's no unity of style (i.e. a consistent look/feel/layout) between
the pages even though CSS is used!

Overall, I think this is a poorly designed and crafted site.

Only if his business is building websites that look like they were designed
by a 10-year-old.

I'm no designer - I just do server-side processing - but I could beat that
in 5 minutes.. Really pathetic.

Are you posting this to show him what a poor image he's creating for his
otherwise successful business?

On the same vein, my next door neighbor (kitchen remodeler) had a great
article in the paper about his biz. Mentioned that he has a website, so I
took a look. It was one of those build it yourself things that GoDaddy
must offer. Totally makes him look like a fool. I didn't have the heart
to call him and tell him, since they are new to the neighborhood and we
don't know them all that well and they might take it wrong and I'd have to
live with that for years. I wasn't thinking of getting his business, as
I'm plenty busy already and wouldn't probably want to do it for a neighbor
anyhow.. Anyhow, some folks just do not have a clue..

Best wishes to you..

The OP didn't have the heart to tell his mate that he had a bad site, and
posted it here for independent opinions.
