Default Website Critique Request. - 08-15-2007 , 01:02 PM

Hi all.
I have just finished a new design of my main site and was wondering
if you all could give me some feedback on it.
It's at http://freewebdesign.awardspace.biz

The text in banner.gif is about 6px high.

You need a proofreader (e.g.: Provideing).

You have links to the current page. This can be confusing.

Visited links' text is far too large.

that from someone with your vision problems. BTW I also think the

There are a number of empty paragraphs and superfluous line breaks in
the text. You should go through the code and clean that up.

The banner is not properly aligned. It should either extend the whole
width of the viewport, or it should be aligned with the content on both
the left and right edges. The gap between the bottom of the banner and
the top of the content is too much, too.

I think you are using too many different colors. The purple in the
banner is not the same shade of purple in the navigation menu. The color
in the banner is a nicer shade, so use that.

The blue in the navbar and footer is too bright/saturated - it hurts my
eyes. The footer also has a spacing issue. In my usual browser window
size and text size, the text wraps to 2 lines even though there is
plenty of space on the sides for it to fit on 1 line. The extra line
makes the footertext block extend beyond the 200px height you set for
the footer. You should get rid of the fixed height and just use top and
bottom margins or padding, then the footer will resize itself as needed
to fit the content.

Hmmm i'll work on the banner (although it's a little better then it
was).

Ahh yes, I think the fixxed hight was still in there from when I was
testing it (it's gone now), it should be better now.

Which?

The banner is now barely readable (a slight improvement; why are
you using an image?), and the link text is too large all the time
(instead of some of the time). The other issues have not yet been
addressed.

The link text size has not improved. Why is the navbar inside the header
block, anyway? It doesn't really belong there. If you move it out of
there, the text size will correct itself, too, since the too-large type
is being inherited from the 200% set on the header.

Like Mr Johnson, I don't understand the use of a graphic for the banner.
Plain text would be better for accessibility. You aren't using any logos
or fancy fonts that would require a graphic, so it doesn't make a lot of
sense to use one.

I still think that, though the blue is now marginally better than it was.

The spacing is still excessive at the bottom of the footer. 6em for a
bottom margin is way too much.

I suggested before that you should read a book on design principals and
learn a little about concepts such as balance and alignment. Your
designs would look much better. You should look at some ready-made
templates to get color ideas, too. Please.

I have done some work on the design over the weekend (is it looking a
bit better now?).

I have done some work on the colours and such, it was looking better
when I originally designed the site (but then I added the banner) I
thaught it looked ok at the time.
But now it's similar to the original although with the colour scheme
that I want for the new design (although not quite finalised yet).

Your color scheme is ... bizarre. It dominates the page rather than
enhances the content. The content is then further muted in dull gray.
What is it you are hoping to convey?
