It would be less cluttered if there was nothing visible before a visit,

a checkmark (without a box around it) after.

I'm trying to think of who might really *need* it.
Maybe someone colorblind, but visited links can be indicated with
a different brightness value -- we are not limited to color.

Doesn't show up in lynx or links text browsers.

....but I don't see any problem with the concept. Seems easy enough to
implement in CSS.
