Nice. :-)

- Opera 3.x-5.x is smart enough to find the PNG background (a
GIF is provided for stupid browsers -- i.e. IE) but not
smart enough to alpha-blend. Anyone know a CSS hack to
differentiate between Opera < 6 and Opera >= 6?
Only one I can find that may do what you want is the "Simplified box
model hack":

p\roperty:value;

http://centricle.com/ref/css/filters/

Haven't tested it myself though.

Any opinions on visual improvements, accessibility and/or cross-browser

As William said, the contrast isn't wonderful. Other than that, nothing
strikes me (only had a quick look).

I already use that to differentiate between IE4&5 and
IE5.5&6, but it doesn't seem to be any use for Opera 5.x
and below. Testing shows Opera 5.12 recognises
"p\roperty:value" just like Opera 6+ does.
What about the third filter on that list?
It's the other way round though, but might work?
(I don't have any Opera 5 to test in, otherwise I'd test before
replying here)

God almighty Toby. You like to give yourself work!

Use HTML 4.01 Transitional, with CSS for fonts and background colours,
tables for layout, and you'll never have a worry! (Neither will your
visitors).

Do you find you often need to support Galician (Opera 5.12) and Celtic
(Opera 5.02) language versions for your visitors?

Not here it doesn't.

What about the fourth one on that list - works the other way around
(Opera 5 applies it, but 6+ doesn't).

As long as I don't support it, I'll never know :-)

Fourth?
/looks again at list...
Right! when I said third in my other post, I meant fourth too
:-)
For some reason I never see that first one, guess my brain
thinks it's part of the header or something.
