This site (which is very pretty) is a load of eye-candy and "look at
my skripting skillz". It's cute, but basically pointless. It doesn't
matter to this site that the content is all squeezed into a tiny
letterbox, because no-one goes there to read it.

So does _anything_ about this site translate to another site; one with
a catalogue to show, or long pages of text ?

Googlebot doesn't have javascript, AFAIK

Many people use their browser's settings to turn of javascript to avoid
popups.

People on assistive technology may not have javascript enabled user agents
or may turn off javascript to avoid new windows.

Ever heard of the bloody pop-up or pop-under?
When JS disabeld in IE you can't get the bloody pop-up.

True enough, but I suspect that your irony detector may be in
need of servicing. After all, Andy went on to say:

It's beginning to sound as if inaccessibility is a design aim of the
page in question, whatever you or I (or Andy, for that matter) might
think about the ethics of such a thing.
