Default re-critique - 02-26-2005 , 12:19 PM

Ok, I've put in place your suggestions - got rid of tables, resizable
images, changed colours, css validated, etc, and I'd appreciate any
further suggestions now maybe (hopefully) I've got the basics right.

One thing I couldn't work out how to do was to stop the floating menu
overflowing the background box. I decided it actually looks OK when it
overflows in this instance, but I'd like to know how to fix that for the
future. EG in http://www.fotch.org.uk/index.php?p=contact_ioc any clues?

Also, have I reduced the image quality too much?

thanks,

Paul

Default Does my website work? - 02-26-2005 , 01:31 PM

Greetings,

I have moved a website onto my hosted servers and would like to verify
that it's viewable by all. Specifically, I had feedback from a person
in France on AOL that she could not view the site. Other AOL
subscribers however can see and navigate it just fine.

I also would appreciate a general UI critique if anyone is so disposed.

emails to webdev018347 (AT) earthunit (DOT) net or use the link on the page.

thanks,

Steve

Right. Well, I am helping a friend rehabilitate this site which was
built for him by a graphic designer, and has remained pretty much
unaccessed for a quite a while.
With no text it's no wonder that he is not listed in any search engine.

The first thing I wanted to do was bring it to my hosting service and I
intend to re-do the same design in HTML with a slide show for the
artwork. I don't have tons of time to work on this and this seems like
the best course of action.

So if you and others think the design is decent, and the hosting
service is working okay, I will speed up the site by getting rid of a
lot of the images.

Your criticism and observations mightily appreciated.

Steve

I guess the absence of replies means there's nothing constructive to say?

Same here. I thought I would wait until the server was back up to make
any comments. After all, if ya can't see it, ya can't comment. <g>

Thanks for letting me know. It seems to be up now, but it seems this
webhost has a lot of downtime so I'm going to change in the near future!

Well, okay:
1) Get rid of the stinking PDF's -- they should be web pages, they look
like web pages so why make me wait to download them and open them with
acrobat.
2) Is the entire signature block a link for the mailto?? It looks like it.
Why should the mailto: appear while I have my cursor setting over your
phone number. That really looks odd.
3) Lower half of the screen, the dots that make up your margin extend to
your outer margin. Is there a reason that you chopped them off at the top
- looks inconsistant.
4) Back and next don't change when you move the mouse over them. If they
are mouseovers why not make them look like one. Visually, they're just
graphics as there is no apparent action related to them. Suggest 'Next
painting' and 'Previous Painting' (some such)
