Default Preliminary critique - 05-24-2004 , 02:47 PM

I'm rewriting my current personal site at and would like a preliminary
critique on how it's going. The original version is here:
http://www.goddamn.co.uk/tobyink/
The rewrite is here:
http://www.goddamn.co.uk/tobyink/TESTING/

Changes include:

- complete code refactoring to make it more modular, though
you can't see that;
- more and better metadata; and
- better style switcher with more options.

It's still a bit rough around the edges -- there are still some things to
be implemented:

- saner URLs (I'm half way there);
- fully implement the "Page Information" sidebar panel;
- redirection from old URLs to new ones;
- allow visitors to add comments; and
- possibly implement TrackBack.

By the way, I'm after a completely anal critique (and I don't mean a
critique of my anus).

Remember to check out the various alternative style sheets -- some are
pretty cool I think.

I ain't gone tell you about the coding of the page. :-D

I see you still have the page that almost a FP designed layout.

When purple flower as artistic style is selected, scrolling of the page
is very slow. The same goes for Saturn and Wheat.

Nice effect with the red rose artistic style, when hover on the content
and sidebar. Especially from difficult to read, to excellent to read.

The skip to navigation link, white on the weat image, is very hard to
read. Perhaps you can change the link into black as the content color.

Imo a better title/h1 would be: "About Toby A Inkster".

Bread crumb for the index page makes more sense that way imo:
You are here:
About Toby A Inkster

Micro fonts (site's default), a print stylesheet should kick in
automatically, not be offered as an alternate stylesheet.

Quote:
Fonts too big/small?
You don't practice what you preach.

Alternate stylesheet selection via the UAs UI doesn't work properly, on
first visit all three were enabled, deselecting one disabled them all.
The behaviour is so strange that I began to doubt my UAs alternate style
selection UI, but it works fine on my own site, so it appears to be
related to your site.

Search...
Predefined in the search box, confusing imo.

Quote:
Site Style

This web site allows you to select your own fonts, colours and layout for a look that you are most comfortable reading.
This is an inherent property of a user's UA, author defined stylesheets
do nothing to accommodate a user's preferences (quite the opposite in
fact), you have no way of knowing what a user's preferences are.

Quote:
Site policy: This page is designed to be accessible and standards compliant.
Don't mention the mechanics. It's fine to mention accessibility and
standards in the site's content section since it inherently pertains to
you, but it should not be part of the site's left panel.

Permanent URL
Pick a url, stick to it, leave out the above.

More mechanics, a "Latest update" may in some cases be useful, although
given the current content I don't think it applies to this page (the
news section already has dated headers).

Quote:
Your use of it may be affected by the copyright and privacy statements, content filtering policy and disclaimer.
What copyright and privacy statements, content filtering policy and
disclaimer?

Are you actually serious about claiming & enforcing copyright on the
content on that page? (if not omit the statement)

Quote:
div id="head"><h1>Toby A Inkster</h1></div
Why the div wrapper?

Quote:
strong><abbr title="Tuesday">Tue</abbr>, 6 <abbr title="April">Apr</abbr> 2004:</strong
That's a header.

We might ream your anus when we're done.

I'll look solely at the HTML for reasons of time.

You did this with FrontPage, didn't you? Razzzzzz...

Why the extra space in the <link> and <meta> tags?

I disagree that your h1 is flawed. It's fine. Though, I'd cut back on the
content about you, who really cares? Mom and Pop and some old girlfriend
probably. They can click on a link "About Toby". In general, less detail
on the front page. More of an overview, and link to further detail.

Your internal URL's don't work. Did you mention that above?

<p>Or try the site map or home page.</p> (markup edited)

Is this REALLY a paragraph?

<p>You are here:<br />Toby A Inkster</p> (markup edited)

Or this?

<p><strong><a href="#">Permanent URL</a></strong><br/>
<strong>Creator:</strong> xxx<br/>
<strong>Created:</strong> xxx<br/>
<strong>Modified:</strong> xxx</p>

Or this?

Verified here. A problem with the width of the float most likely.
