Default Please can u give a critique of my web site. - 05-25-2007 , 03:59 AM

Being totally unfamiliar myself with building a web site, I have paid
out several hundred pounds for my small business site be constructed. I
would appreciate comments on the quality of the delivered product.

(I could have done a better job for less, even on the inflated southern
rates I would charge.)

I think what it is presenting is a driving school in Blackpool, which
can also give lessons in Fleetwood, Lytham, etc. But this is not
altogether clear.

"Theory Training Provided Pass plus Fleetwood"
What does this mean? Why is there no full stop on the end of the
paragraph?

I prefer always to see a space after a full stop, comma, etc. I find
this makes text more readable.

"a duel controlled Vauxhall Corsa"
dual controlled

"Registerd"
Registered

I get the impression that this is a one-person business, with just the
one instructor. That's fine. But a half-hearted and unconvincing
attempt to pretend otherwise makes it look dodgy. Why not come clean:
"I am based in Blackpool, but can also provide lessons in Fleetwood,
South shore, St Annes, Lytham and Ansdell areas."

The pages
http://www.open-road.eu/index.html
and
http://www.open-road.eu/
are very slightly different, for no good reason.

Oh my, several hundred pounds?

Fixed font size, and at 12 pixels, way too small for my eyes. Users of IE
cannot resize the font without using their accessibility options. When I
increase my font size (non-IE browsers) the menu wraps, badly.

Verdana as the first choice of font. Verdana is not a suitable font for the
web. Search the archive for reasons.

Incorrect use of tables for layout.

Fixed width. What happens if my browser canvas is not exactly 749 pixels
wide?

Those grey bits at the top and bottom, "driving lessons blackpool" etc.
Looks like search engine stuffing, that is, putting possible search terms on
the page without such terms actually being part of the content. That is why
they are probably an unreadable grey.

No doctype meaning you are running the browsers in quirks mode, reproducing
old bugs. It also means the site does not validate.

Even assuming a doctype the document is invalid:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...u%2Findex.html

1990's style HTML and way verbose CSS. This was obviously generated by some
sort of HTML generator. The teltales are: ultra long lines in the source; no
indenting of the source, at all; <BODY
class=body><!--HLayerStart--><!--HLayerEnd--> (HLayerStart?); extensive use
of deprecated attributes (vAlign etc) in spite if the CSS present; Incorrect
use of <br><br> to simulate paragraphs; probably others.

The most severe problem is this: you appear to be using a totally unsecure
server side process on your contact page.

This field:
<input type="hidden" name="recipient" value="info (AT) example (DOT) com"> (address
changed on purpose)
implies that I can write a small javascript function that would use your
contact form to send out spam to wherever I want to, and you will be blamed
for it.

You should pull this down right now, before the spammers find it and start
using it to send spam to all and sundry. If you don't then they will find it
and your host will pull the page for you. There was a thread over in alt.php
or somewhere recently about exactly this.

I don't mean to be harsh but... lets wait for more responses :-)

Richard thank you very much for you comments which I appreciate very
much. I didn't realise the site was so bad.

But please could you point me in the right direction as how to go about
building the contact page in a far more secure manner.

Grateful thanks,
Ed

For "several hundred pounds" you've been ripped off. I would expect at
least a first quality graphics and layout design, if not a well-coded
implementation. You got none of that.
The HTML coding itself is atrocious.
I am assuming the big red L is significant in your locale? (I'm in
southwestern USA.)

Whew! Lets start at the top:

The "title" of the site makes no sense. What will show on Google "IF"
you get found in a search is; "Driving lessons pass plus theory training
motorway lessons female instructor in the Blackpool area." Does that
mean anything to you? Seems confusing and nonsensical to me.

The "description" meta tag isn't a description, but just a bunch of
keywords. Not a good thing.

The light gray on white text may or may not show up on Google as "hidden
text", but it also serve no purpose other than spamming that I can see.
IE: "~ Driving Lessons Blackpool ~ Driving schools Blackpool ~ Driving
lessons Lytham".

Setting fixed width and height on the page prevents the page from
adjusting to different browser resolutions.

What is with the "L" in the tilted block in the upper left of the page?
Is that a logo? It doesn't seem to relate to anything I can find on the
site.

I'm far from a design expert, but you really should ask for your money
back. Sorry.

Regards,
Frank

(just to answer Frank's question)

The big red L is immediately obvious to all Brits as an "L-plate". Such
plates must be carried on both ends of all vehicles controlled by
unqualified "learner drivers". See e.g.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-plate

Ah. Ok. Thanks for the explanation.

Hi. I had a look at your site yesterday and frankly I could have done
a better job for free.
It sucks, the codeing is perthetic and I think it would be an anoyence
to try and update that site with the code it is currently useing.
