Looks good mechanically (but line 21 in CSS has error, according to
validator).
I know - in this case the validator and I part company. Others will be
able to express the technicalities better than I.

Me neither - but what is?

Many thanks to all those who have replied so far.

In summary - the blue text has been replaced. The pink/salmon/whatever is
now darker.

As for which colours are appropriate for the trade - I have no idea.
Perhaps some kind soul has a clue for me.

Once again - thanks all.

Get a collection of the client's stationery and brochures. Usually there
is a color theme of some sort there that can provide a starting point.

The site looks good. A few more links would be good though, but I am
sure you will get around too adding those.
Once again chaps (and chapesses) I am grateful for your contributions.
I've made some alterations which I hope have fixed the issues raised and
I'd now like to address points and questions (in the spirit of usenet) ...

o e: & w: - yes, I've expanded those to be more clear - and the mail
address is already using encoding @ . etc.

o links & lists - well yes , I'll address the thorny issue of navigation
should the client ever provide more information - as it stands, what you
see is what there is.

o boring? well yes, probably - aren't all sites boring unless one needs
what they have to offer? in which case simple, boring = clear and easy,
which is (IMO) an asset. The client has quite some skills as a
photographer - perhaps they will get around to supplying a pic or two for
illustration at some point.

o blue - well there appears to be some contention here blue stays in
the absense of anything better. I don't do graphic design and my world is
living proof that I am unable to choose suitable colour combinations for
anything (at all)

o collisions - ugh FireFox - appears when using nowrap for too many page
elements.

o _height - raspberries to IE - header div partially disappears without
it. Note: there are other hacks, but this appears to me to be the
simplest to implement. AIUI only IE acknowledges the instruction - all
others safely ignore it, because they don't understand it. Perhaps one of
those CSS gurus will pop by and provide a simple-to-grasp technical
explanation.

o font - sans-serif is specified. if it looks sh*te in any particular UA
- fix the config to suit or use another browser. similarly, font-size is
set to 100% - you know what to do

o CSS specified twice or more - well the UA takes the last value - others
are in there merely to document where we had been - in case we needed to
go back.

o code/markup layout - that's simply part of my modus operandi - I usually
lay out the first page (in this case the only page) fairly neat so I can
see what I'm doing. When I'm happy I split up the page into logical
sections (and, of course, the CSS goes into its own file) so that other
pages can simply call in the header/footer/&c. as required.

For all your help (and kind words) I am grateful. Thanks.

I am not familiar with the subtleties of UK locale naming conventions.
Specifically "Newcastle Staffs." There is an actual web page for it,
<http://www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk/>, but instead of Newcastle Staffs it
calls itself Newcastle-under-Lyme. Are they both correct? Is one
preferred? Oh! I see, Staffs is a borough(?) name?
Then there is the Stoke-on-Trent spelling. Is with and without hyphens
both correct?

Red, white and blue. Very patriotic.
There are lots of options besides nuclear blue. Try #69d or #8ce.
Use the client's stationery and brochures to get a color theme. It has
the advantage of presenting a coherent promotional front.

Miscellany:
- Add the company's name to the <title>. At least on the home page.
- The first paragraph ("Professional and well established...") is missing
a verb. Change it to, say, "Arrow Investigations is a professional and
well established...". Also, that first sentence (it's the whole paragraph)
runs on too long. Break it at "offering".
- Not everyone knows what "I.T." is, or IT Crime. Offer a <dfn>.
- Maybe add a few links, like to Newcastle, Stoke-on-Trent, The Potteries.
