Default just launched....how's it look? - 11-13-2006 , 01:39 PM

http://www.littleworksusa.com

i know that there's an issue on the homepage in IE7 and that VS.net
adds in code that makes some pages not validate (wherever i have a form
w/an image button), but other than that, how's it look/function?

thanks

Hi,

I am sure that people much more skilled than myself will critique
your site but can I say that I laughed myself silly at some of your
site reviews on 'Fixmysite' :-)

Hello, Jason

It looks pretty nice, with some good work behind it. Of course you want
some criticism, so here's what I can throw at you:

From the elephant image on the Home page, I got the impression the site
was for African products (jewelry, trinkets, little statues maybe), but
then, as I flipped from page to page, I decided the site was for
handmade cards. I see now that "handmade cards" are clearly mentioned
right there on the entry page, but either I'm tired (or just dumb), or
it could stand to be made clearer. BTW, the other big image (besides the
elephant necklace thingy) looked like a light switch plate. If it were
bigger, maybe we'd see that it's a greeting card, and it would help
clarify the situation (and impress us with its quality).

It's a bit surprising to get scrollbars (v & h) at 800x600. At the same
time, the site doesn't use more than about 810 pixels in width; the rest
is always wasted, if I have my browser window wider.

You specify text in px, so my IE won't let me resize it.

The text is too small (12px) for me to see clearly, so I have to bump it
up 2 or 3 sizes to be able to read it comfortably. Fortunately, I can do
this in FF even with px-sized text. Better than 12 px would be 100%.

Because the blue background is so, um, colorful (I wish I knew the
correct technical term; I think I mean "saturated", but maybe I mean
"deep", or something else like "non-contrastful"), it's a little harder
to read even when the text size would otherwise be okay. Makes it more
necessary for me (and maybe others with better eyes) to bump the size.

If images are turned off, or a visitor can't see them for some reason,
the navigation on the site is disabled. You need, as a minimum, some alt
attributes for the nav link images. I know, you don't expect to sell
artwork to blind people, but we ought to give 'em more of a chance.
Besides, people on dial-up might be surfing with images off, and if they
aren't convinced by the text on the first page, they'll just drift away.
And oh! I see a card with a quote from Helen Keller...

I selected the Helen Keller card, decided I wanted four of them, then
clicked "Add to cart". I got an error page at
http://www.littleworksusa.com/produc...aspx?mapid=107 with
"Server Error in '/' Application.
Runtime Error ...[etc.]"
Don't know what I did wrong. It happened in FF 1.0.7 and IE6. I didn't
try anything else.

Looks like there's only one validation error in the entry page; good work!

I hope my notes are useful to you. I'm no pro, but maybe my criticisms
will help. Good luck!

(BTW, your sig separator is missing a trailing space; it should be
DASH DASH SPACE LINEFEED
your siggy)

Hi Jason,
Theres a problem with your menu roll overs on your inner pages (about us
etc). Half the menu isn't showing and only appears on roll over (and not in
the nice way you intended). I'm using ie7 BTW works fine in FF. Other than
that, looks good.

John -

Thanks so much for the feedback! I think the reason why you got a
server error was because last night during the time you were posting, I
was making some final QA updates to the site and uploading the DLL file
several times very rapidly as I would make a change and see if it would
work. Every time the DLL file gets uploaded, it cancels out any
session objects. If you want to go back and give it another try,
please do! I promise I won't be touching it any time soon

i don't know why you're getting horizontal scroll bars. that's just
silly.

You are having problems reading size 12 font? seriously? 12 is
standard, man.

As for not knowing the site was selling cards, I mean, I got nothin for
ya. The site _is_ a card, in addition to saying so on the homepage.

The point about having images off is valid. I could try to figure out
a way around it, but I don't think that's in my budget. As it is, i'm
using background images, not hard images, so I can't really add an alt
to the image. However, I suppose I could add a title to the link. I
will try this. Good catch.

yeah, validation errors....vs.net 2003 inserts some invalid attributes
to an imagebutton when it compiles it, so every page w/an imagebutton
will be invalid, but only because of that. annoying, yes, but at this
point there's nothing i can do until i pony up the dough for vs.net
2005

anyways, thanks again for your feedback. i have been working on my own
site (www.jasonedelman.com, don't go here, it's not live yet ) to
get my own little operation going, so hopefully you can help find more
crap i've missed in the future.

But it just happened again. In FF and IE both.
In FF, I notice that I get a javascript error when I select the
particular card:

Error: final is a reserved identifier
Source File:
http://www.littleworksusa.com/aspnet...IValidation.js
Line: 343, Column: 24
Source Code:
final = "";

I don't know diddly about javascript (not enough to debug this) but
maybe this is a clue.

Maybe it's your standard, but your visitors will probably have other
needs (which may vary simply because of the machine they happen to be
using at the time; home and office PCs, for example, might be different).

Well, that shows how dense I am. I didn't realize that was what it was
supposed to be. I thought it was a little package, packed, perhaps, the
way it's done in Africa.

that's why it hurts
However, I suppose I could add a title to the link.

I'm not sure this will help; they're not the same things.

I am pleased/sorry to report that I don't see the problems Paul reported
on the About Us page. I always see the menu rollovers.

There's nothing standard about it. On my system, with my eyes, and
the distance I sit from the screen, it is illegibly small.
