Default Help with Google please! - 11-27-2006 , 01:07 PM

Hi all

I have been running a small internet business for about 6 months,
www.chi-mania.co.uk and while I have been able to get high rankings for most
search terms on Yahoo and MSN, despite Google crawling the site and indexing
it, I cannot seem to get listed in the first pages for those same search
terms!

Please could you take a look and let me know where I am going wrong, as my
other site www.pioneeradjusting.co.uk is No 1 on Google and I have used the
same ideas when building chi-mania site re keywords etc.

All help gratefully received.

Many thanks
Chris Ray

What search terms are you targeting?

If it is "dog clothing", "dog accessories" etc. then Google does not
take much notice of the terms that appear in
<meta name="description".... and <meta name="keywords"....
It places more emphasis on the <title> content.
You could try expanding the <title> to something like:
<title>Chi-Mania, Posh Togs for Small Dogs - dog accessories and
clothing for dog</title>

Google also takes notice of the content of heading tags <h1> <h2> etc.
I don't see any use of these at all on your home page.
The animated "Clothing accessories for you Chihuahua and friends" serves
no useful purpose and cannot be read by Google. You would do better to
have this as straightforward text, using a <h1> or <h2> tag.

Many thanks Martin, I am targeting search terms like "clothing for small
dogs", "clothing for chihuahuas", "dog clothing" etc

Will try your suggestions, but could you clarify <h1>, <h2> tags please, as
I built site using Frontpage!

Thanks again

Chris

The idea is that you can have different levels of headings on the page,
from <h1> to <h6> with the contents of <h1> tags being given the
greatest weighting by Google, the <h2> and so on.

I do not use Front Page so cannot tell you how to incorporate these tags
into the site using that program. Perhaps someone else can help here. I
suspect many people would tell you to use something better than Front
Page!

I suspect that Front Page has a Help section, so have a look for
headings or h1 or similar.

You can (if you so choose) specify in the .css file what
size/colour/font the text will be for each heading will be, otherwise
<h1> by default will appear in fairly large letters.

One way to learn about html is to have a look at how the code works in
other people's web pages. Right-click on a web page and select View
Source. The code will open up in notepad or something. On many sites you
will see some headings like:
<h1>Clothing accessories for you Chihuahua and friends</h1>
<h2>Practical and fashionable clothes and accessories for your
Chihuahua</h2>
Google will take more notice of text within these tags than it does of
normal text.

Sorry - it's a bit hard to explain in a few lines.
If you are keento learn, have a look at some of the online tutorial
sites like http://htmldog.com (straightforward language) and
http://www.w3schools.com/html/ (more formal).

http://htmldog.com/guides/htmlbeginner/headings/ explains about
headings.

Like we said to you before, LEARNE HTML, and CSS.
If you do not want to learne these, pay a designer who knows what they

Thanks to you both for the advice, I will certainly learn more about HTML
and design!

Will incorporate changes and see how it goes.

Thanks again, it is good to know there is help when it is needed.

Chris

Hmm, the design is ok, it's more the codeing I was commenting on.
Personally I would scrap the entire thing
and start over.
Do a search on Microsoft FrontPage and HTML in this group to find out
why it is not a good editor to use.

As I said, it would be *easier* to just start over.
