If you're looking for a code critique, I have three points of improvement:

1. Put the CSS into an external file. It will make styling the site more
managable.
2. Remove the style attributes from the html elements and keep all the
style information in the external css file.
3. Drop the table layout. It can quite easily be done in CSS and will
prove to be easier to update in the future.

If you're looking for a design critique, well... I don't really know
where to begin.

Probably the first big no-no is your use of heavily textured backgrounds
in #2 and #3. This even goes behind the navigation menu on the left and
makes #2 absolutely unreadable.

Tbh, if I were you, I'd do a little research and browse *many* sites for
design ideas. Note down what works and what doesn't work, and use this
as a basis to start again. The three keywords you thinking of as you
start the design are useability, cohesiveness, and colour.

I really am so sorry if I sound too harsh,

Awful. Even the logo is awful.

My eyes! My eyes! Are the links supposed to be readable?

This is the best of the three.

I plan to. But right now, it's easier to embed it as I'm sketching
things out. That way I don't have to keep editing 2 files at one time.

See above.

That bad, huh? Don't I get any credit for not having anything that
blinks? :-)

Could you tell me what browser you're using? I only have IE6 and
Mozilla on my machine. I agree that the background-background is
pretty busy, but I didn't think a simple gradient would be regarded as
"heavily textured."

I asked for design suggestions before. I have absolutely no
creative/artistic talent, but I can imitate fairly well. There are
over 4 billion pages on the web. References to attractive sites or
lists of same would be much appreciated. There seem to be a lot more
lists of *bad* design than good.

I wouldn't have posted if I didn't want some useful suggestions. I
can't make the site like Amazon or eBay -- it's got to be friendly and
reasonbly colorful. I searched on 'templates' and scanned dozens of
'colored top bar and a page of text.'

Thanks for your time

*Everyone* hates the logo. I'm not responsible for it, and don't know
at present how wedded the client is to it.

They are to me, but if others have trouble, I'll have to change them.

I don't think it's "heavily textured" either.
but on http://home.earthlink.net/~absolutelyfake/indexgold.htm
the menu text over the gradient may be hard to read on a cheap monitor.
or a badly adjusted one. but even on a good one, it's not so easy to read.

perhaps you could put your gradients and accents outside of text areas?

I like http://home.earthlink.net/~absolutel...ar/winlogo.jpg best.
the other felines are too jagged.

It's changed since I commented on it.

As it stands, I quite like
http://home.earthlink.net/~absolutelyfake/indexred.htm . It needs a
little polishing but the majority of it is looking good.

I liked that, too, but the client is wedded to the purple 'logo,' so
there go the red and gold versions. (I didn't create the purple one.)
