Default Feedback please. - 04-09-2004 , 03:49 AM

Hi,

I've created the menu system for a new site i'm working on. My friend
says he can't see it in MSIE 6 but works OK in Netscape (works in both
for me).

http://www.gep.co.uk/testanim

Move your mouse over the words Dark Matter to see text fading in the
main graphic, the only link working so far is R in dark which should
fade in 'live dates' text in the main graphic.

Any ideas why my friend cannot see this menu properly?

Thanks.

Dene

Maybe he isn't patient enough?
I too thought my IE didn't show the words, but it's just
appearing quite slow (I'm on broadband). In NS7.1 they don't
fade in or out, they appear instantly. I looked in NS first,
so in IE(6.0 and 5.01 on WinXP) I thought nothing happened.
In IE it's too slow for any non-suspecting visitors.

Mystery meat navigation. The words "Dark Matter" don't look like a
navigational device, and even if by chance someone guessed that it was a
navigation tool they wouldn't have a clue what each letter did.

Ridiculous (over-)use of image slicing. Top frame consists of 49 different
images where 1 would have done fine. This brings the top frame in at over
0.25MB (an ideal page size is under 30KB)

Completely unneccessary horizontal scrolling of the tour dates page at
anything under 750px (hint: that's a lot of people!) by insisting on a
huge left hand margin.

Thanks for the feedback mate, I really appreciate it. i've trimmed down
the animated gifs a little so they now fade in quicker and now the links
work, please can you tell me if it's any better. I can't understand why
it is slow, i'm on Broadband too and it seems to come up pretty quick,
the filesizes are not really big at all.

Thanks again!

Dene

Yep, it's quicker now.
Still, keep in mind what Toby said, that's all true too. ;-)
What might help (a little) is having the letters themselves
light up too when hovered. Because even seeing the words
appear, doesn't make me think the letters are links.

I'm viewing in Opera. I see no menu items. Just a logo at top and bottom.

Aren't there supposed to be clear links in a navigation system?

What menu system?

Oh. Ok. Mystery navigation. Mousing over those letters does not cause
any 'fading' in several browsers I tried.

Clicking on the second R I get to twist my head to see the word
"ANDISE" at the left. Andise?

Do consider that your visitors with 800x600 monitors have less than
500 vertical pixels for a viewing area, even with browser maximized.
Your top and bottom banners use up approximately half of that space.

I don't know... maybe:

"<p>This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them.</p>"

Google for that sentence...

Because the anim is slow to show. Perhaps they aren't waiting long enough on
the letter?
