Default daKitty - more stuff - 07-10-2003 , 12:19 PM

Good morning,

I cleaned up my test page from yesterday. Visually it looks exactly the
same, but it degrades very nicely with CSS off and the comments are much
better.

http://hall.j.m.home.att.net/samples/layout2.html

The new layout actually looks very clean in my editor as well - a
surprising bonus.

thanks
Interesting.

I'm curious, why is the first sentence all in caps?
That little thing kind of sits like a bone in my throat, considering just
typography.
Are you mimicking something?

In a 'freeform' I'd maybe put the first word in caps...

Yes, the layout is almost straight out of the last issue of TIME
Magazine, with some adaptations for media. I was going to dupe "Popular
Mechanics", but like I said before, they do some things that do not adapt
as nicely to a web page.

*shrug* It's not original, but I like it.

Maybe I'll grab ahold of National Geographic next ...

Yes, you are right, that would look much better.

Yes! Practice for both coding and layout.

I get to see how a pro does it in print, and gain practical experience
adapting it to the web. Plus, now I have a template for one
"professional" layout - which of course I will adapt and modify until I
like it even better.

Why should I reinvent the wheel, when the work of scores of excellent
designers leaps at me from every printed page, every picture, every box
.... ?

That's the idea, anyways.

Do you do any drawing? It just occured to me that a side benefit of your
career might be some hefty drafting/drawing skills ...

Yea, I do all kinds of drawing. I'm an artsy fartsy kind of a nut
Definitely drafting, hand or cad.

Photoshop, flash, any graphics program, really...
I LOVE 3D stuff.
I'm good with 3D modeling, cause I've been using cad, AutoCAD since it was
v. 2.6 (1988).

Got something in mind ?

I did some 3D animation with Studio Max at college - absolutely loved it,
but I'm not very artistic :-(
