Default Critique Update! Thanks Guys! - 05-26-2004 , 03:34 PM

Just wanted to give everyone an update on my progress.

I week or two back, I asked everyone to critique http://www.bswanky.com

I have done the following and am proud of the results so far:

1. Fixed CSS to work properly w/ Opera / Mozilla / Netscape and other
browsers. For some reason, the background was only stretching properly for
IE and there was alot of empty background spaces.

2. Add KEYWORDS in title, <H1> <H2> and more content on page.

3. Changed ProductListing?CategoryID= whatever to explicit urls (ie.
childrens_clothing.aspx ... (using keywords)

4. Used alt tags for all images.

I am proud to say my ranking on keywords are incredible in such a short
time:

Google

BIRTHDAY OUTFIT -> #4
BIRTHDAY CLOTHING -> #4
BIRTHDAY DRESSES -> #13
YO YO CLOTHING -> #4 (not a surprise)
CHILDRENS BOUTIQUE -> #21 (huge keyword for our site)

With even better results on YAHOO and ASK.COM

I also have a request into YAHOO to move my directory entry from a PR5
listing to PR7 ... same w/ DMOZ...

Also swapped more links w/ PR4 and better sites.

I will continue to optimize and tweak where I see fit.

I just wanted to thank everyone on this board for contributing.

Please feel free to offer up any criticism or advice for
http://www.bswanky.com

Thanks again!

The pages have a nice sweet and fresh look, working fine in Firefox,
also pretty with images turned off. Well done!
You repeat quite a few times "childrens clothing", missing an apostrophe I
presume?
I think you should have the string "B. Swanky Children's boutique" in the
title of every page, and the title of the front page is too long!
"Click for details" is unnecessary, as both image and text is clickable.
"Join our mailing list.
Click here to join!": Remove the last sentence and make the first one
clickable instead.
"Browse Category": Remove the underlining.
You should work a little on the alt texts - "baby gift" for the credit
cards - hmm...
"Swanky-Baby Photo Album": Why is that an image of text, and not text?

Using px for font sizes means that IE users can't increase the size of
the text without invoking the accessibility option 'ignore font size'.

Overriding your fixed sizes gives a slight problem:

So, you are recommending I DO use px when specifying font sizes?

No, the need for people to be able to read your site should override any
specific presentational desire. But be sure your design works in IE at
"Largest" at 800x600 at least, preferably even smaller. Yes, it's a pain.
But it's worth it.

I googled, and I got 29000 hits... I think I have figured out that you rated
my comment as "slightly positive" and thus giving me good karma. Is that
right?
