The coding is ghastly. Layered <div>s for no observable reason, 5 deep
in some places. There is even a <div class="wrapper"> in a <div
class="wrapper">! And a "wrapper" in a "container"? "<p> </p>" used for
line spacing? Ugh.
The body text size is set to 76% of my preferred, comfortable size
(100%). In other words, it is too small for me to read easily. The problem
is aggravated by the light-on-dark format which is inherently harder to
read. If want to see tiny text, make it tiny on *your* monitor, not mine.

From a user's point of view...

The fonts are small. When enlarged so they are easily readable, the menu
wraps when there is still lots of space on the menu's first line.
Annoyance factor: ***

The white text on black is a look that I am not particularly interested in.
I like a little colour and a little less harsh contrast. Annoyance factor:

I have my viewport set quite wide for a reason, and seeing large black
columns of empty space on either side of the page isn't the reason. I am
used to it though, as so many websites do it to me. Annoyance factor: *

From a site maintainer's point of view...

The coding looks overly convoluted. Not a problem if you work on it every
day, but what happens if you come back to it in six months? Will you
remember where you left off?

Fair enough dave, just thought I'd give people the option. Didn't mean
to anger the Usenet Gods.

Thanks to you and carolyn both for the advice. I was impressed that
google's software let me assemble that site in about 30 minutes, but it
does certainly need more looking at, and I'm going to try playing with
their templates a little next.

Re carolyn's comment about the color scheme, i realize it's cliche, but
it's also supposed to take a backseat to the photographs, so low key is
the idea. Of course, if it's too bland, it can be distracting, so I'll
play with that too.Hopefully I'll be able to deal with your annoyance
factors when I modify the template. The menu is indeed an ugly hack,
that most likely only looks good to me. All i did was toss a bunch of
tabs between the links to space them out in that text box. that's first
up.

Thank you too, I think I'll be addressing the markup issues as best i
can, as i mentioned in my first post. Also, to make it clear, this is
google's code at the moment, not mine.
