Default Critique request - redmiresds.co.uk - 12-22-2003 , 02:57 AM

Hi everyone. I did the following site for the business my girlfriend's
sister
works for. Both the management are her are happy with it (even the dreaded
mailtos, which weren't my choice) so since it's "finished" for the time
being, I thought I'd ask for some opinions. It's nothing special, but it
validates and looks nice enough to my eyes. However, any huge mistakes you
could point out would be great to know about!

The address is < http://redmiresds.co.uk > - thanks for your time.

It's a nice looking, easy-to-use site; navigation between and within
pages is good.

Just a few suggestions:

(a) Try and get a better quality graphic for the company logo.

(b) I'd suggest your <h3> headings should be <h2>

(c) How about putting thumbnail photos on the 'About Us' page to make it
a little more personal?

(d) Try defining some of the abbreviations earlier on. Your potential
clients may well know what they mean, but most people won't.

(e) Check your text. You have *a lot* of typos.

The main problem is failing to leave a space between the end of a
sentence and the start of the next. 'subjects. The' may not look too bad
on the screen, but screen readers don't like it and will try and speak
this combination not as [subjects] [The] but as [subjects] [dot] [T] [h]
[e].

Run it through a grammar/spell-checker.

(f) Lose the '[ ]' combination when delimiting the 'page menu' items.
Screen readers will speak 'right bracket' -- 'left bracket' between
items.

regards.

Have you tried narrowing the window? The menu goes all to cock and the
left/right margins are far too big at 640x480.

Only a few of the pages validate (home and about).

You're not going to believe this, but that is a cleaned-up and massively
improved version of what I pulled off the original site. There's no
paper-based original to re-scan, so I guess I'll try to make a better
version from scratch when I have time.

Good point - I originally had the page title as <h2>, but for some reason I
took it out. No idea why; I should probably change that too!

I'm trying to get pictures from them but a few of the members aren't so keen
so we're not sure what to do at the moment.

This is the text a C&Ped off the original (Frontpage) site. I just plain
don't have time to proofread things that they put up there in the first
place, so I'll pass it on to them to sort out and I'll amend.

I had a big problem with these - no idea where else or how else to put them
in. I considered a div floated to the right, but in the end I backed down
from that - any suggestions? )

Thanks again for your time.

I can't get 640x480 on my PC, it doesn't go below 800x600. I narrowed the
window to the width of the company logo and it got squished but looked okay.
Could you possibly provide a screenshot of the "going to to cock"? )

Oh, poo. I shouldn't have assumed that they all did. I'll check that out
later tonight, thanks.

You do not need to set your monitor resolution. Just make the browser
window that size. You don't always have it maximized, do you?

Put this bit in a local page you your computer:

<a href="javascript:resizeTo(240,400)">PDA: 240x320</a> /
<a href="javascript:resizeTo(640,480)">640x480</a> /
<a href="javascript:resizeTo(800,600)">800x600</a> /
<a href="javascript:resizeTo(1004,728)">1024x768</a>

...or use Opera which has an option to show the size in the title bar.
Other browsers may as well.

(The PDA size extra height accounts for my extra toolbars.)

Very clever - I like that :~)

Is there a similar javascript command to request it to maximise on whatever size
monitor you happen to be using at the time?

Steve.
