Default Critique Please - Portfolio Site - 04-07-2007 , 09:32 PM

I'm thinking of updating my portfolio site again and would like to hear what
you think. You'll notice two or three phases of web philosophy here, and
now, since we've been in another phase for about year now, I would be
interested in your thoughts.
The old site is at http://www.etonys.com .
Thanks.

I notice only the Flash-only phase of Web philosophy. What others am I
missing?

I'm sorry, but your site (really only a page, if that) is all but
unusable. All I can tell from it is that Anthony Stephenson (you,
presumably) does art & design in seven areas (advertising, brochures,
.... Web design). I have no idea what part of the Earth you inhabit. I
can see only the clown figure as the sole example of your work.

What if people don't have Flash, or don't have the version of Flash you
require?

What if people can't read the teeny-weeny text for the seven areas? (I
guess they wait for the large version of each phrase to come and get
tangled up with the small texts, as they obscure each other with
matching greys.

What if they don't notice the tiny and very faint "Contact" link?

What if they don't have an e-mail client configured on the computer
they're using (as at an Internet cafe)?

What if their eyesight is exceptionally good, they have Flash, they
don't mind you forcing a Flash-only page at them, and they are still
interested in your work, and want to see an example (besides the clown)?
The minisule thumbnails merely suggest a variety of completed projects.
They don't convey anything about the actual artwork.

What if people wanted to hire you? Or buy some of your work? Do you sell
anything? How? Where?

You're better off with http://home.att.net/~aps.net/, which also has
problems, but at least it has /some/ content for search engines to
index, and so comes up higher when I specifically search for "Anthony
Stephenson."

BTW, the logo (reinforced by the clown doll) looks like eToys, not
eTonys. I guess that that might be deliberate, but it won't help folks
find your site again.

I hope my criticisms are useful for you. Good luck.

John

I generally agree with all that John had to say. Additionally, I find
the noise on mouse-over annoying.

Flash sites hurt my brain. I keep flash installed just so I dont miss out on
anything, but most designers are lazy and use flash as a way of forcing
there work on to the web rather than working with the media. Take a look at
http://www.csszengarden.com to see what I mean. I would never hire a
designer with a Flash site.

The text is too small for me to read.

The noises are annoying.

Why? There is customers who needs Flash made sites like artists and
those who needs AdSite for their movie. These sites needs to do high
graphical skills and lot of skills with Flash.

I agree, the odd Flash movie is fine to show off, but an entire site is a no
no in my book. A good artist nows the limitaions of canvas and doesnt try to
force thord party aplications on his/her users.

Ah yes. And Microsoft has made all its software open source. Pass that
bottle back over here. I like it!
