Ish. Just the thought of making extra work for myself makes me cringe,
but maybe you like it.

I have doubts that this is the best way to go, especially since the
future is a big unknown.

I'm with you, kchayka (how do you pronounce that !?!)
Ish. Code to the standards. If everyone did, then the dinasour would *have
to* evolve. Kind of ironic, considering their current marketing campaign
for Microsoft Office.

Too many projects, too little time Looks like I'll need to poke the
stb manufacturer again to update the browser. No vertical-align? Damn
them to hell!

You do have a point there. Who know what stb we'll be using in a year.

I agree, but in this particular case I had to get it to layout on a
set-top-box that we use. The stb only handles basic css with no
positioning, margin and padding control. I would not use browser
detection outside of checking to see if the browser is on one of our
stbs. Browser checking in the big wide world does not work and is
nineties tech, but in this particular case it would work (unless we
change stb or if they ever update the browser).

On a similar note. I was called into a meeting the other day with a
salesman selling SEO. One of the things he said was that we should list
keywords in image alt attributes. I called him on this and said that
that's not what the alt attribute is for. Asked him what a blind person
would make of random words being read to him by his browser. He replied
that the 'alt' was not for users and anyway blind people don't use the
www. Asshole. I also said that I doubt if google would be overly keen on
alt abuse and may possibly bar site, thus defeating this method of SEO!
He then made a personal attack on he and thus persuaded the company
directors not to use his firm. Looks like everything came out fine

Oh well, the trade show starts today and, purely by co-incidence, I'm on
holiday for a week
