Hi I have created a new website for my business and was wondering if anybody would mind taking a look at it for me to point out any glaring errors or areas for improvement. I'm not a web developer so am trying to keep things simple. I am willing to take any comments and suggestions on board and would appreciate honesty even if it is all bad! www.paradoxofreality.com Thanks! |

Otherwise, very pleasant and a good choice of colour scheme.

The image at the top left of every page is in a slightly different position on the "Home" and "Details" pages compared to the other two. The quote in the upper right corner:
- is not attributed to anyone.
- The grammar is poor: it should be "... you've always gotten," there
should be a comma after "done."
- There is a line break after "done" such that the layout looks poor when
the text size is increased.
- Incomplete DTD (doctype). Some of the code uses XHTML-isms.
- No background color given for the <body>.
- The links almost disappear when moused over.
- Only one link (Details) has a "title" attribute.
- The main content area is too small for a 3 column layout. Most lines
have no more than 4 words on them, most have 3 words. If the font size
were set to 100% (as it should be), the word count would drop further.
- The layout of the main content is rather random, a quote here, an image
there, a paragraph yonder.
- While landscape images are quite pretty, how do they relate to your service?
- The abstract fish image is rather, erm, Christian-ish. Is it related to
the dolphins somehow?
- Hire a copy editor.

All my quotations are unattributed as they are all public domain and
over time, like proverbs and fairy tales, it can be difficult to
ascertain their true origin. I believe the original author of this one
was Mark Twain although it has been quoted many times by different
people, often with a variation on some of the words. I have chosen to
use "you've always got" as I am UK English speaking and it sits better
with me.
The doctype and colour comments are noted and I'll be addressing them
as soon as I learn more about the right way to do it.
I have checked and all of the pages have a "title" attribute. I'd be
grateful if you would clarify this as I may be missing something.
I am interested in your comments about the random layout. It does not
look random to me and I am wondering whether it is a "personal
preference" comment on your part or if it is a genuine layout concern
where people may have trouble reading the content. I'd be grateful if
you would clarify what you mean.
The landscape images relate to the therapeutic nature of my work. Many
of the people who come to see me do not have nice images in their
heads. I wanted to create a pleasant and appealing first impression.
The abstract image is a part of my logo and is just an abstract image.
I find different people usually see different things in it. Some people
see a key, an ear, a lobster, initials, and now a religious
symbolism... I think it's nice having it like that.
Regarding a copy editor.... I don't need one when I have been fortunate
enough to find this forum to point out my mistakes! :-)

tag, in this case an <a>. The "title" is what is shown in the box when the
mouse hovers over the link.

The main content area would be better laid out as two columns for all of
the text, followed by the testimonials, and a single column for the list
of features. Remove the small, irrelevant tree image.

site is just disorganized.
Each page has a different color scheme for the content area. There is a
general lack of consistency
throughout the site. The home page says too much without generating real
interest for the reader
to move further into the site.
Move the testimonials to a new page. Describe the philosophy of this
treatment plan to another
page. Reorganize and simplify the home page. Add text that describes the
problem the reader
might have, indicate that you have a solution, and then make it easy for the
reader to link to a
page that shows what that solution might be. Then link to an appointment
page from there.
Make your site flow from (A) Home, to (B) description of solution, to (C)
benefits of solution,
to (D) sell the appointment, book, or other service. Ask them to contact
you in the easiest way
by email, or phone (if appropriate), as soon as possible. Convince them
that they will live with
their problem for the foreseeable future unless they contact you for the
resolution or cure.
Whenever a reader clicks from one page to the next, nothing should change as
far as colors or
surrounding layout. Only the text and pictures contained within the content
box should change.
