Default Best of Show - Internet World Conference - 02-20-2004 , 01:46 PM

Hi,

I am evaluating a web "lease" solution. It's from the University of
Central Florida's Technology Incubator program and recently won "Best
of Show" at Internet World Conference for e-commerce.

It's for a small to mid-size business with little or no technical staff
to be able to manage and update a website easily and affordably.
Basically, if you can use MS Word, you can operate your site. There's
no software to download; it works thru the Internet Explorer browser.

I'll be doing "live" requested updates and periodic changes if you want
to bookmark and watch awhile.

Take a look if you would and let me know what you think:

I don't quite see how using MSW and IE requires less computer knowledge than
using a GUE ftp client. I'd take the ftp client anytime!

Try following this link:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht... ne&verbose=1

Also,
Whatever generator you're using has used 495 lines of deprecated code to
make a page that could have been written in under 100 lines, and without
the need for javascript. I'm certainly impressed, but not in the way you
would likely want me to be.

Thanks for your considered response; the amount of code is something I
hadn't thought about. hmm...

As for the ease of use issue, I didn't explain that very well. MSW
isn't used at all, I simply meant that if a person was familiar with
computers enough to edit a word processing document, they would have
the minimal skills necessary to make editing changes instantly on their
website. They would never encounter the term "ftp client" -- they would
click a "publish" button instead. Again, the intended audience is the
average business person who either doesn't have a website yet or has
one he feels "stuck with" because he can't make changes readily.

Again, I appreciate your thoughts and thanks for the tip on the MarkUp
Validation Service.

A "publish" button just doesn't do the job with any ease of use.

Ease of use requires *at the very least*
a directory be displayed for the remote host, and a directory
be displayed for the local computer. You should be able to
highlight groups of files from either directory and transfer to the
other directory with a click.

gFTP (for 'nix) and ws-ftp (for 'doze) will do that. I wouldn't
want to have to keep up a site with a 'publish' button -- particularly
not a business site.

At the bottom of the home page:
"If you have any web experience, this is gonna BLOW YOUR MIND!"

Indeed. This is just another fine example of how _not_ to make a
usable web page.

BTW m, I assume that you included the ~75 spacer.gifs in that bundle of
deprecated code.

I missed those. Kinda like a time
capsule, isn't it? But who am I to
argue with a 'Best of Show' jury?
