Can anyone please point out an example of a site with the ideal display of
large numbers of thumbnail images?

Ideal? That's rather absolute... If you do a search for
'thumbnail gallery example' you'll find plenty of sites,
and if you're not obsessed with using CSS rather than
tables for layout then just pick one you like. If you
*would* rather use CSS (and damnit, everyone should
then take a look at:

http://icant.co.uk/articles/dyngallery/gallery2.html

It's an example for an 8-page article that explains how
to make a gallery - here's the first page:

http://www.devarticles.com/c/a/
Web-Style-Sheets/Dynamic-Galleries-with-DOM-and-CSS/

One note on the thumbnails themselves: rather than
shrinking the whole image (which tends to make details
impossible to see), cut out a key part of the image and
then scale that part down. It'll make the gallery far
nicer to use.

My opinion on thumbnailing:
http://www.mbstevens.com/howtothumb
....although click-through thumbnails are not always
the best answer. See:
http://www.rstoutart.com/
....which uses normal links near thumbnail sized images,
giving a number of views.
