Let your eyes tell you as you slowly scan the page - are they tired from
bouncing left, right, left? Anything jarring? There's one item.

I followed the advice often given here and left it up to the user to
choose their own line length by adjusting the width of their browser
window. ;-)

The max length markup doensn't work across the browser divide so it
hardly seems using it.

That's not the issue. On YOUR window with YOUR setting, didn't you notice
anything odd or jarring?
How
CAN
I
make
this
clear?

IIRC the Falklands have a very small pipe to the outside, something like
10Mbps for the entire country. The images would have to be much smaller
than
100+K :-)

LOL if only we had 10Mb/s we have 1Mb/s in and 512kb/s out.
Bits or bytes? I was talking 10M bits/s, standard end user cable connection
speed. 1M bit/s is dreadfull.

And as I said the people that this site is meant for, the forum and

The remote rural areas of Australia are lucky if they get 33K connections.
Yes, we have several gigabit pipes coming into the country but they end at
the edge of the city :-(. brucie will tell you.

I did originally make a header image exactly as Toby demonstrated but
took it out.

I also tried making a watermark type background with a map of the
islands, but decided that it didn't add anything and took it out.
Hmmm. Good idea. If you stick to a small number of colours (2, 4, 8) and
make it a gif then there are places around that will compress the bejesus
out of your gif. A full page not too complex "watermark" might only be 5K.
Don't let it obscure the content though.

There are plenty of pretty Falkland pics sites out there already.
I've a few on my site at http://www.viking-house.com/webalbum/photos.php
Stick a few of them on there anyway, smallish and heavily compressed (10K
like tobys example) or even thumbnail teasers, like on your site (nice) but
at 1K per each.

Those that are interested may just spend the few minutes to download a
reasonable looking 30K image. Give them the option :-)

Thanks for the input anyway.
No problem.

Well then if you were to keep the page (including CSS and graphics)
to ~15KB, it should load in under 5 seconds.

Is the server that the site is going to reside on based in the Falklands
or is it on the other side of the pipe?

Ahh I guess your getting at the offset headers. Well how many times do
you read the header/banner/whatever at the top of a page. In all the
page design texts that I have read or been taught that is the least
important part of the page, it's the last thing a reader scans, and
doesn't affect the readability of the text on the page.

Yes it would have been more 'correct' to left align the 'Representing
the rural community' slogan too, but well that would have just been too
boring I think!

My opinion is that offsetting the two parts of the header on this page
gives it some balance.

If that's not what you mean please lay it out in black and white as
suggested by Richard.

Chris

bits.. My day job is a satellite communications engineer and I'm
intimatley familiar with the circuit. This is a real 1Mb/s though not a
best effort cable job.

Yea they still have some party lines over there too where you have to
book your call in advance ;-)

Yea I think I got it down to about 4k, might put it up on a test page
again and post the URL here for comments.

I'll have a think about that. But it's not my site, I'm only building it.

It's in the Falklands, the one it's on now.

Well, consider using a little server-side magic to test the IP of the
visitor, serve them a graphical header if they're in the Falklands and a
text header if they're outside.

This way the image never leaves the islands, so you don't need to worry
about it clogging up your plumbing.

This is EXACTLY why I don't usually provide follow-up. Your disingenuous
reply is a complete waste of my time.
