which web design program?

Several years ago I created some web pages with a simple html editor. Now
I'd like to get back into doing a few web designs using state of the art
software. Any suggestions? Any good web sites with comparisons?

When I started to load that page, my McAfee AV reported that that web has a
reputation for spyware/adware- I did notice a pop up window- I closed both
quickly, so I hope I avoided any spyware/adware.

I personnally use and recommend Mimine[1] (French name, but works
beautifully in any language).

I'm sure the software that has been suggested so far is very good
indeed. I don't know about those particular applications.

However I think that what is required for web-page creation more than
anything is a good text editor with GREP searching and multi-file disc
searching.

GREP as you probably know is Global Regular Expression Parsing and even
with a very limit knowledge of it, it is very useful. It allows you to
find and replace strings of text based on some known criteria and some
unknown criteria.

Combine this with good multi-file disc searching and you have what is
needed when you realise that some part of your creation which is on all
pages needs changing. I find this happens all the time.

I use a Mac and the text editor I use is BBEdit, but I'm certain there
are excellent app's of this sort for the PC.

Probably the simple HTML editor you were using before will work just
fine. There is no such thing as "state of the art" for HTML - HTML is
static. A plain text editor works best. However, I would also suggest
a good style sheet editor as well.

I like HTML-Kit <http://www.chami.com/html-kit/>, a very good plain text
editor with syntax highlighting and integrates with both Tidy and
TopStyle. It also has hundreds of different plugins available for
whatever other tasks you may need to do. I use Top Style Pro from
<http://www.bradsoft.com/topstyle/>, although not for its HTML editor.
