Default site search engine - 11-11-2004 , 08:06 PM

I just read in "what we hate on the web"
http://www.lowendmac.com/musings/02/0528.html that a site search engine is
liked by more people than I would have thought. Does anyone have
recommendations for one that is free or darn close to free, easy to install
and works well?

I still think that's what a site map is for...

Depends on the size of the site.

See http://www.google.com/searchcode.html
.... and BTW, the code they provide is awful. I re-wrote it to be XHTML
1.0 Strict at http://opro.org/googlesearch.html, so you can feel free to
steal that.

I did, lol. Thanks again. I now have a "search" button on my home page
www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net . I'm thinking of putting the "search" link in
front of the "site map" link on the navbars on most of the other site pages,
example www.TheBicyclingGuitairist.net/schwinn/

I have a link to the "search" page from my home page. Is it a good idea to
have the link to search from EVERY site page, or is that way overkill? I
already have a link to the site map on every page, and a link back to the

www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net (home page)
www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net/schwinn/ (example of "search" link added to
another page's nav bar)
www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net/ranchero/ (example of a page without the extra
search bar link added yet)

When I used the code I pinched from you the search engine works half-fast on
my site, that is, not too swift. It can find results for a site search for
"red baron" but not for "michelle reeves" so there's something screwy going
on.
Also, when I went to the google site to register my site to see what would
happen, I got the following result after entering my domain (I tried several
forms, with and without the www., all lowercase, etc.)
Google sez:
There are no pages in our index for "thebicyclingguitarist.net" We cannot
perform SiteSearch on this domain(s).
Bummer.

I can't explain. Perhaps Google has yet to index the pages in question.

Where did you go to register your site? The free Site Search requires no
signup.

Can't explain without more info. I have discovered no issues with Google
Search.

It might have something to do that I am for now still hosted on that windows
IIS/5.0 server that might not be configured properly. I don't know... When I
followed the buttons for a free upgrade of the free code, I reached a point
where I got that message from Google that says "You do not exist according
to Google's internet-ional law."

Makes sense. If a user is lost and looking for something they could be
on any page. I provide such links (although not a site map yet) on my
site - see sig.

My search engine is hand-crafted PHP, as I store my content in a
database so searching is easy. It's not bulletproof but works quite
well, and I've been surprised how many people have used it (ie >0).
