Default Real time web stats - 02-18-2005 , 07:57 PM

Does anyone know of a program that would allow you to be notified (via
audible beep) when someone is on your site. Right now I have a telnet
session where I "tail" my apache log. This is a good visual system but
often my telnet session is minimized so I don't see it. (obviously, I
don't get many visitors yet!).

Thanks!

I don't know of any, but the writers of TV sitcoms seem to think such a
thing exists, since whenever they have a plotline that involves a
character setting up a personal Web site, they always seem to have it
start beeping, and showing dots on a huge map, to indicate all the hits
the site is getting, which always react immediately by ebbing and
flowing in huge numbers depending on what interesting or boring thing
the person put in the site that very second.

I should probably be ashamed for recognizing this, but you are drawing
your example from Lizzie McGuire, aren't you.

*sigh* What happened to all of the good Saturday morning TV shows.

Yeah, the episode where Matt starts a webcam show... :-)

But I think there've been similar ideas used in other TV shows on
occasion, and also in a Doonesbury comic strip way back around 1995
when the Web was first catching on.

I think the worst example of this was in an old FedEx (or maybe UPS)
commercial that I used to see everyday on CNBC. Basically it was 4
people sitting around a computer, celebrating the launch of their
e-commerce site. Within 5 seconds they recieved there first order,
which escalated into 10000+ orders within 15 seconds. *sigh*

As for the original topic of this thread. I only know of one company
that makes what you are looking for and it is NOT cheap. It's designed
for huge sites that get over a million unique hits per day and the cost
is $1000+/month. If you haven't already, try searching hotscripts.com
or any other script resource sites for what you are looking for. You
may find something written in javascript that tracks hits to each page
in real time.
