Default Looking for a good & cheap designer builder - 02-26-2004 , 03:14 AM

Hi. I'm looking to have a web site build. Unfortunately I do not have much to
pay, but a price can be talked about after I give the builder details. The site
is to be a news site that will be updated regularly by a few writers. So it
will need a program kind of like PostNuke. If anyone has any experience in
something like this, please feel free to contact me. Thanks.

Max

I'm looking for someone to operate on my back.
I have a herniated disc that needs fixing. Unfortunately I do not have much
to pay.
If anyone has any experience with back pain, feel free to contact me.

You're funny.
You're the cheapass that wants someone to design you a website for next to
nothing.
What's most priceless is that you say "good & cheap".
You expect a "good" designer to do a site for "cheap"? What the fuck is
wrong with you? Would you go to a BMW dealership with a check for the amount
of what a used Gremlin costs? No, because the dealer would laugh at your
stupid ass and tell you to get off their lot. So don't come on a newsgroup
offering to pay jack shit for a website.
Buy a fucking clue you idiot, and recognize that people work hard to learn
their skills. If you want something good, then pony up the money.
Otherwise, buy some fucking books and learn how to do it yourself.

First off, I never said next to nothing. I talk prices with the people who have
been contacting me. And even after I give them an idea of what I want and how
much I have to spend, I still have them asking them for the opportunity. I'm
sorry that you;s so rich and high and mighty that you would never stoop so low
as to work on something for some extra cash. You ever hear of a Part-Time job?
Some people work them in their spare time for some extra cash. Same principle
here. I didn't ask from someone to build me an entire network for some loose
change. I forgot that you are Karl Gorves, the most successful web desginer in
the world. Oh I didn't forget, I just never heard of you until now. So get off
your fucking high horse karlcore.

I do work on the side, too. For $40 an hour, which is within the same range
as someone would rightly pay a web design firm, because
that's what it is worth.

I'm sorry, but to think that someone pays you $40 for a site like the
"resume'" site you have up is astounding. Though I was VERY impressed by
the "css checker" link. Oh my he can create a (or copy someone else's)
simple CSS page.

The band site that you did for "fighting Chance" is TERRIBLE and YOU didn't
even create it.

The point is that you're actually not good enough to be making what the web
design "firms" make. Anyone can throw code. Even *I* can do that. I
certainly wouldn't charge $40/hour for the things I saw on your "View My
Past Work" page. Especially since you had to list some of them twice just
to look like you've done more work than you have.

Now those are just my opinions, and everyone has them. But for someone who
is working for a company like silverpoint, you shouldn't be on the newsgroup
sending posts like the ones you have ... As a matter of fact, the last
couple posts that have been on here might just drive me to send a contact to
that company informing them that one of their "contractors" is posting
messages like a 12-year-old on a public newsgroup.

You could enlighten us as to what's wrong with it. To me, it's clean,
accessible, good-looking yet not pretentious design.

Agreed. Like I said, just my opinion. To be honest, I actually LIKE the
simplicity of it, but it isn't very original-looking. Looks like something
done with a Front Page Theme. But I wouldn't pay $40/hour for it. Simply
because that's not the going rate here where I am. and even if it were, if
I'm gonna pay that much, I want something that catches the eye...not all
full of flash crap, just something that makes the person say "Wow, nice
website". The band site really threw me off. Did they REALLY want it to
LOOK like that?

One intent was to say that if you're going to brag about working for a
corporation like Silverpoint, you should conduct yourself in a professional
manner, not post on public forums acting like a 12-year-old. The comment
(quoted below) is very childish, and there isn't a business in the world who
would be caught (if they wanted to STAY in business) allowing their
employees to be telling potential clients (yes, I know the man said he
didn't have much money to pay for it) to "fuck off". Believe it or not, I
found his site halfway well done. The ones he uses as "past work" are
bearable. Some (like the band site) just downright amateurish. I can only
judge his ability by what I saw there, and don't believe that *I* would pay
that much for it. Besides, where I am, web hackers are a dime a dozen. NO
one HERE pays $40/hour. Just the way that this place works and the way the
market is right now. Now some of the sites that silverpoint does are worth
that sort of money, but I wouldn't hire them when one of their "employees"
is posting in public forums stuff like:

"You're the cheapass that wants someone to design you a website for next to
nothing."

and

"Buy a fucking clue you idiot"

Both of which were in his post on Saturday, February 28, 2004 3:41 AM

Some people have to remember that not EVERYONE wants to pay that much for a
simple webpage and considering that the man never said how MUCH he was
willing to pay. For all you know, his view of "cheap" is $75/hour. What
SHOULD have been done, as a professional, is to help the man find his
answers. Otherwise, you simply end up as one of the "bill gates" of the
world. If I were in the man's shoes, I would contact silverpoint and each
and every client they have on their clients list and send them copies of
what their "employee" is saying on a public forum. Not many businesses get
by cussing people out because they've asked for a cheaper price. If they
don't want to pay what you need them to pay you, you simply say "I'm sorry.
I can't do it at that price." or MAYBE even add a slightly more polite way
of saying: "If you can't find someone to do it at that price, here are some
links that can help you learn how to do it yourself in a short time."

I suppose my original intent was to say that the man was asking, in a very
sincere way, even, for someone who might be able to help him, obviously for
not quite what the going rate is. (Though, again, he never mentions an
amount, or where he is located.) What's wrong with that? Someone up here
was selling a snow-machine for $2000, and I wanted it, I also looked around
for someone who might have it cheaper. As a matter of fact, I did that very
thing and found the same snow-machine for $1200. Should I have paid the
original person the $2000 anyways? I would be an idiot to do so.
