The one about site search engine. I was all excited to have the Google one
with valid code, etc. (thanks Neal) but then really bummed when it produced
erratic search results. I've taken it off my site for now until I can figure
out what's going on or find another brand search engine to replace it.

But who says it's erratic?
Can you provide an example where doing a 'site search'
via the Google HTML(or Neal's adaptation) doesn't give
the same results as doing the same search at www.google.com?
After all, they do the same thing, so it's unlikely the
two methods would differ in their results.
It's a different issue if you prefer the results returned
by 'another brand', but that still means people using
Google won't be finding your site using the search
phrases you claim produce erratic results.

Ah but Dave, I've had troubles with Google and my web site for eighteen
months now. I've got dozens and dozens of postings all over the internet to
various search engine and web site forums and newsgroups. Actually the
on-site version of Google does a much better job of indexing my site than
the main Google (that doesn't index my site at all, even though it used to).
Still, the on-site version of Yahoo does much better.

Yes, that is what I've been crying about the last eighteen months. I went
from having dozens of my pages listed for years in Google near the top of
their search terms, to none. From PageRank 6 to PageRank 0. People can find
me in Google, but only by finding some pages about my site, not any of my
own pages. Google has refused to tell me what if anything I have done wrong.
Most experts seem to think my web host has misconfigured the server. I am
switching hosts this month to one that runs Apache server instead of
Windows, and with a different tech guy who hopefully knows more than the
last one.
