If I were to have a database driven consumer site ...just starting out
-and want to buy my own server and host the site myself..

Technologies:

PhP, MySql, Linux, Dreamweaver

1. What equipment would I need ? Server, software etc ?

2. How much would each of the above cost ?

FYI:
I am not a techie...and have no knowledge in this space.

Software:

- You probably want an HTTP server as well.
- Mysql is cheap and fast and popular, but not the most stable or reliable.

Hardware:
- Internet connection. Cost varies depending on speed, volume and
technology (DSL, Wireless Broadband, T1, fiber, ...).
- Server depends on how many CPUs, how much memory, types for disk and
network adapters. Generally about $3000.
- Disk drives: depends on how many and how reliable you want them to be.
RAID systems offer excellent reliability but are expensive, starting at $5000.

It depends on the hardware choices.

You are in for a steep learning curve, then. And you'll end up being a

Well, these numbers assume low-end "enterprise"-level hardware. You can
easily do it for much less. A second-hand PC and a couple of decent disk
drives using software RAID could be set up for virtually nothing other
than your time; an identical redundant system could be kept sync'ed up
and ready to go should the first machine fail.

It all depends on the level of usage you expect. Neither my suggestion
nor Jim's would run Amazon's site...
