There is no HTML specification that

There never has been, and there probably never will be.

Never should there be.. did it ever cross your
mind that a web standards association should not bow
to each and every pissant browser maker that invents
some 'clever' new tag/element?

I agree. That's why there's nothinhg wrong with implimenting a
specification and extending it as required. In my opinion Abbey
Internet should have written their own DTD in order to achieve this,
however they have implimented the specification as closely as possible
without sacrificing the additional features that are available to some
browsers. The page will still display correctly in any browser.

How do these tags/attributes render on Lynx?
..Or is it irrelevant?

Perfectly.

But, ..since you appartently have the amzing ability
to predict/extrapolate how these irrelevent elements
are processed and presented on the mutlitude of UA's
on which they might be viewed, maybe it is a moot point..
Nope, I'm an experienced cross-platform tester with access to every
version of every browser-platform combination that I know of.

Name a browser that has a problem with this markup.
Browsers are not the only web clients. Don't forget that XHTML is a
trademark of the W3C. Mis-describing invalid source as XHTML is a
violation of the W3C's trademark.

There are attributes in there which some browsers require,

despite the fact that

The validator is only a tool. The validator's merely telling you that
your XHTML is b0rken.

It is impossible to write a 100% XHTML compliant web page that

Why bother with XHTML if you don't understand what it is?

It is impossible to write a page that complies 100% with any current
DTD and still supports all browsers and all possible functionality.
Now you're just being silly. WWW compatibility isn't about "all
possible functionality".

You appear to be yearning for the bad old days of tag soup. So why
not cast off this mantle of XHTML, which clearly doesn't suit your
style, and go back to tag soup? : the majority of browsers are
optimised for rendering it, after all. Leave XML-based markups to
those who understand what it is and what it's for.

Why would this stop anyone being a commercially successful web
