Default How to become a domain registrar - 05-23-2005 , 05:06 AM

Dear All,

We are going to start a web hosting companies.
Now there are hundreds of companies that do this, so I dont understand
why I am finding it so hard to find how to do this.
We want to provide domain registration for UK domains. Researching
Nominet I've found that we can do this programmatically.
But most domain registration companies provide you with the facility to
change the DNS set up, and webforwarding, etc options for this.
Nominet havent been to helpful on this.

I also thought that there is probably some software out there that
could probably do all of the hard work for us regarding account
management.
Does anybody have any information or links that could help me on how to
get up and running as a domain registration company?

Many thanks

John

You possibly may have wanted to research this a bit better before deciding
to set up a company doing it. As you say, there are already lots on the
market. What can you offer that will be better / different?

It may be easiest to simply become a reseller for one of the ones listed in
the magazines.

Is this really related to site-design?

Well, our unique selling point is classified information at this point!

But yes this is related to site design as we will be doing web-site
design and creating a platform for new designers to start creating new
sites.

We will become a reseller to begin with. But I have found that this
really handles your customers hosting accounts, and not the domain
registrations.

We really want to find out how to do the domain registrations as easily
as possible, and to not have to reinvent the wheel. We wish to automate
the process and provide as much functionality to the users as possible.

Has anyone tried using Mac OS X Automator to register domains
auctomatically? In theory a process could be worked into the checkout
page and instructed to visit a certain website to register domains
using keychain logins. In practice... well.

Ok. I wasn't trying to find out what it was - just see if you had one.

Ok, I would suggest you ensure you arent biting off too much at once.

They will do both. I have used hosting services to set everything up for
clients. It is easy and saves you a lot of potentially unnecssary effort.

If you don't mind re-inventing the wheel then contact the domain name
registrars and find out how you can automate the process through them. Then
create some bespoke software to allow your clients to purchase domains,
through your servers to the domain registrars.

Easier method may well be getting the hosting services to do it for you.

Thank you for the reply.
The reseller host that we were thinking of using doesnt allow us to
purchase domains.
Do you know an ASP hoster that provides reseller accounts that has this
functionality?

Possibly www.oneandone.co.uk or www.netnames.com - I am not sure. I will
have a check and see if I can find anything.
