Mr. Thompson, thank you so much for responding. I've been waiting a long time to get my questions answered...[handshake] I agree I have a lot to learn about coding type computer operations and that's why it's important for me to get my learning curve trajectory correct. You state this involves Macromedia Flash, JS, and image maps? Do you care to offer more insight? I have a book entitled, "Platinum Edition - Using XHTML, XML, and Java 2" published by QUE in 2001 (ISBN 0-7897-2473-1) that I hope will guide in the right direction. Your response suggests this is correct? Considering the capabilities of Dreamweaver and Flash, is it possible to accomplish these effects with open source applications and decent coding skills? What language are we talking about XHTML or XML? Are objects as displayed in the jpg created from scratch or are they already part of a Macromedia or Adobe package? Can Adobe products accomplish the same things as Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks? Can Tcl or Perl take the place of Java in these situations? In your opinion, what's the best open source web authoring application? Do you know anything about NVU from www.nvu.org? I'm sorry for the cross-posts and attachment. This would be much easier if Netscout still had their site as it was and also if someone from Netscout had responded to my queries back than. Mr. Thompson, you've already been a much-needed help. Any additional information you might share is well appreciated. I realize I'm asking a lot of you; but rather than not answer at all, please consider answering on your timetable or in partials. Perhaps you could tell me where to look? Yes, I did mean "www.solaristhemovie.com". The solaris1.jpg, and more perfectly, the movie "Solaris" displayed the same wonderful imagery that I saw in the www.netscout.com site of a few years ago. The movie Minority Report used the same technologies also, but those moving translucents in Solaris were just like Netscout's and it fascinates. I don't care if it takes 3 years to produce the page(s). I just wanna get started in the right direction. As a Network Guy, I've built a couple web servers and one day I wanna put my own content on one. It's just hard to find time, ya huh? I'm also looking forward to programming experiences to enhance my networking skills. Chow. ..I have a book entitled, "Platinum Edition - Using XHTML, XML, and Java 2" Of the threee technologies mentioned, that book covers ..none. The only one that is close is JS (Javascript)/Java, but only because those two languages start with the same word. |

...Considering the capabilities of Dreamweaver and Flash, is it possible to accomplish these effects with open source applications and decent coding skills? ...interesting question. Define 'decent'. Personally I would not regard a person who is unable of independently determining that XHTML/XML/Java != Flash/JS/Image Maps, as a person likely to gain a grasp (without at least 18 months training) in the relevant concepts fast enough, and well enough, to produce a site from it. |

Actually, I am having a hard time getting a guage of your abilities, but what I have seen so far suggests to me that it would be an uphill battle for you. Especially the bits where you ask for an editor that will do these things for you. There *are* various editors out there that can 'hack out' both JS and image maps. They produce such crappy, broken HTML and JS though, that I would not allow such an editor to get it's grubby little bits on any of my documents. |
|
Excuse me? What does 'Open Source' have to do with ..anything? Do you simply want a 'free' editor? If so, yes there are many, if you want the *source* *code* for the editor, in what language? I've been playing with my Linux boxes of late and noticed the mention of |

Might you recommend better materials that put me on the right path covering image maps and JS, along with any other dependencies you consider appropriate? |
