Default Help for Newbie, Want to Send JPG as Example Asking "How To..." - 11-02-2004 , 12:36 AM

What software technologies can produce graphics shown in JPG? I have a file
called "solaris1.jpg" that I'd like to send to someone
who might tell me how to create imagery as shown in the file and build a web
site around it. Previously composed text follows.

Help! In the attached Solaris1.jpg file is a computer screen displaying
graphics. What software and technologies are used to
produce such graphics in a web site design? The objects are moving with
vibrant transulcent colors. A few years ago
www.netscout.com's site was setup in almost exacting style. 20th Century
Fox's www.solaristhemovie is currently kinda like
www.netscout.com's was, but netscout's was better.

Mr. Thompson, thank you so much for responding. I've been waiting a long
time to get my questions answered...[handshake] I agree I have a lot to
learn about coding type computer operations and that's why it's important
for me to get my learning curve trajectory correct.

You state this involves Macromedia Flash, JS, and image maps? Do you care
to offer more insight? I have a book entitled, "Platinum Edition - Using
XHTML, XML, and Java 2" published by QUE in 2001 (ISBN 0-7897-2473-1) that I
hope will guide in the right direction. Your response suggests this is
correct? Considering the capabilities of Dreamweaver and Flash, is it
possible to accomplish these effects with open source applications and
decent coding skills? What language are we talking about XHTML or XML? Are
objects as displayed in the jpg created from scratch or are they already
part of a Macromedia or Adobe package? Can Adobe products accomplish the
same things as Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks? Can Tcl or Perl take the
place of Java in these situations? In your opinion, what's the best open
source web authoring application? Do you know anything about NVU from
www.nvu.org?

I'm sorry for the cross-posts and attachment. This would be much easier if
Netscout still had their site as it was and also if someone from Netscout
had responded to my queries back than. Mr. Thompson, you've already been a
much-needed help. Any additional information you might share is well
appreciated. I realize I'm asking a lot of you; but rather than not answer
at all, please consider answering on your timetable or in partials. Perhaps
you could tell me where to look?

Yes, I did mean "www.solaristhemovie.com". The solaris1.jpg, and more
perfectly, the movie "Solaris" displayed the same wonderful imagery that I
saw in the www.netscout.com site of a few years ago. The movie Minority
Report used the same technologies also, but those moving translucents in
Solaris were just like Netscout's and it fascinates. I don't care if it
takes 3 years to produce the page(s). I just wanna get started in the right
direction. As a Network Guy, I've built a couple web servers and one day I
wanna put my own content on one. It's just hard to find time, ya huh? I'm
also looking forward to programming experiences to enhance my networking
skills. Chow.

That's www.nvu.com not www.nvu.org.

You're welcome. In return, I ask that you post comments
after what you are responding to, and trim the rest.

Another suggestion I will make is *not* to change the subject line
of posts unless *absolutely* necessary, as then they will not thread
correctly in my news-reader or the standard Google groups interface.

Internet Explorer? Alt | v | c (view source)

Looking directly into the source of a web page is one of the
most fundamental ways to find out how they do things.

Of the threee technologies mentioned, that book covers ..none.

The only one that is close is JS (Javascript)/Java, but only because
those two languages start with the same word.

....interesting question. Define 'decent'.

Personally I would not regard a person who is unable of independently
determining that XHTML/XML/Java != Flash/JS/Image Maps, as a person
likely to gain a grasp (without at least 18 months training) in the
relevant concepts fast enough, and well enough, to produce a site from it.

Actually, I am having a hard time getting a guage of your abilities,
but what I have seen so far suggests to me that it would be an uphill
battle for you.

Especially the bits where you ask for an editor that will do these things
for you. There *are* various editors out there that can 'hack out' both
JS and image maps. They produce such crappy, broken HTML and JS though,
that I would not allow such an editor to get it's grubby little
bits on any of my documents.

For my editing, I use TextPad, which shows the raw text of whatever
I am editing (with pretty colors for the keywords and tags) but precious
little more. Just the way I want it.

If you get an editor to 'write your stuff' for you, then
a) It is crap.
b) When (not 'if') it breaks, you have little idea how to fix it,
and assuming you can figure how, you then have to 'fight' the editor
every time it goes to overwite your corrections.

Quote:
..In your opinion, what's the best open

Excuse me? What does 'Open Source' have to do with ..anything?

Do you simply want a 'free' editor? If so, yes there are many,
if you want the *source* *code* for the editor, in what language?

No, never heard of NVU (and yes, I noticed you corrected the URL).

As you do, I consider myself at the very beginning of this part of my
development. I didn't come out of the womb knowing anything about computer
networking, but I know something now...[smiling] While I've always
respected programmers I never gave serious thought to developing myself
until I say Netscout's site a few years ago. As a computer desktop support+
person and then network administrator/engineer, I've always been aware of
how programming and database development could enhance my abilities, but
often ya just don't get the time. It's give it to me now and nevermind
that, we have another emergency. Some of what you say reminds me of me
because I'd often comment on how it is we have yet another emergency. LOL,
trying to assert that we don't have another emergency, we have another bad
decision; if you had done as I suggested 90 days ago this mail server
wouldn't be broken today...[hahahaha]

I've been playing with my Linux boxes of late and noticed the mention of
"open source" in your message and just decided to ask about it. Yes, I'm
interested in free. Yes, I'd gathered that Netscout's sight involved Flash
and if I know that if I decide to undertake this on Windows it will cost
more than if I pursue under Linux. Before I can determine what route to
take I'm trying to get a feel for what's out there and how folks are
accomplishing the look I'm after.

Well, I'm not really sure.

I generally do not use image maps myself (there is an amount of
extra effort to make a site that degrades gracefully to pure HTML*,
and my techie. type audience would not be impressed by them anyway)

As far as JS goes, there are very few JS books out there that
are worthy of recommendtaion, so instead I take questions to
comp.lang.javascript.

OTOH, that comment above about the 'pure HTML' form of a site
is something you need to consider. You should *not* make sites
that are 'unworkable' without Flash, or JS, or images, or..
well anything but HTML.

To create a *great* site, you first start with a fully functional
HTML site and add extra functionality for those with the extra
plug-ins/abilities.

So, what I am leading to is, perhaps you should put aside all the
extras for the moment and create a (strictly and only) HTML site..
*first*.

After that, you will probably have a better feel for what other
things you need/want in your site, and how to go about creating them.
The best group for starting to make (HTML) sites is
comp.www.infosystems.authoring.html.

(..BTW, I trimmed the rest of your post because I am already
straying too far from my areas of knowledge, perhaps others
can advise further.)

HTH
