Default Div vs Table - 06-08-2004 , 01:36 PM

Hello,
Recently (to me anyway) there has been a move to eliminate TABLEs and
replace them with DIVs. There have been some posts that ask how to make
multi-column layouts without tables, for instance.
Why are tables becoming less preferred for layout?

You might start here..

[ Though I myself still rely on tables
for the 'outer' page structure (nav,
header, content, footer) ]

Simply put, <table> implies a table, which is a collection of various
types of data rendered to allow rows and columns to compare and contrast
the data. Page layout falls out of this scope - therefore, when the author
is interested in semantic markup, <table> is a poor choice for page layout.

So, the basic observation seems to be: Because CSS is now stable across
a variety of browsers.

I am currently converting a few sites I have written in the past using
tables for layout.

It is such a relief to see how clean and easy to manage the HTML-code
becomes now when using CSS instead!

Likely a reference to some idiot saying that Reagan's face should be added
to Mt. Rushmore...

<lol> No reference to Reagan at Mt. Rushmore by me.

"Carving on the side of a mountain" would be similar to:

Displaying on a marquee with flashing bright lights
Using a billboard along the highway
A large newspaper headline
...or by any means that gets maximum exposure.

Ah, I understand!

I had to ask because my first interpretation of "carving on the side..."
was more like "insignificant"
