Very minor point as I only had a moment to check it out. Why do you have a
US and a French flag?

Let me guess: An English language version, and a French language
version?

If so, see http://www.cs.tut.fi/%7Ejkorpela/flags.html

"Flag as a symbol of language - stupidity or insult?"

But did I guess right?

Silly me. I thought it meant there was an American and a French version so I
never went any further into the site. Being neither I thought there was
nothing there for me.

If there had been an English flag I may have realised it meant English and
looked in.

Sure. Easy mistake to make.

That would work better for me. Either that or use some other method to
indicate there are different language versions.

I liked the conversation I have seen the last few days. I understand
that flags are somehow politilized symbols. However, it is the most
used symbol on Internet because it allows a quick identification of the
language used. I don't think that there is a perfect visual solution. I
have made little modifications on my website to improve it.

Strictly speaking - are the flags needed? You are trying to get across a
visual cue to the language used - maybe a graphic of the word would be
better than a flag. You now have the text as well, so why keep the image. If
you need a visual clue, why not try to develop something unique?

I am not 100% sure why the American flag is used to denote English language
(I am speaking in general terms now). Is it to differentiate spelling I
wonder. :-)

Flags are often used and I can understand why, but as people have been
trying to tell you, you run the risk of confusing or offending your readers.

For example, Maybe you don't have Flemish, but if you did: how would
you identify it? It's not the only language of Belgium. For that
matter, Castillian is not the only language of Spain.

And there are at least 20 countries where Spanish is widely spoken.
It's possible that many people in South or Central America might not
recognize the flag of Spain.

The flag most often used for English is probably the Union Jack.
Experienced Internet users in the US know they can look for the Union
Jack, but what about those who don't know?

Why not just use the words for those languages, IN those languages? If
you like, use one or two colors to distinguish the languages, colors
that could be taken from the flags of the most "important" country that
uses each language.

Yes, they are useful to signify a geographic area, while confusing
those who are looking for a language. As has been discussed many
times before.

Why this emphasis on "visual"? WWW pages can be presented in whatever
way the *reader* wants.

A graphic of a word? What's wrong with the word itself? (In its own
language, of course).
