Default Blocking Opera Browser - 05-24-2005 , 09:46 PM

Can anyone tell me how I can block Opera users from viewing my website?

Thanks
Marcus.

You can't, at least not without blocking everyone else as well. Why
would you want to anyway?

Well, you could check the User Agent description in the header and
server different code based on that. But since the User Agent value in
Opera can be set to whatever the user wishes, the method won't be 100%
effective. In fact many change it to allow Opera to be acceptable to
IE-only, UA-probing sites.
So, really, you can't.

Identifying itself as IE is actually the default in Opera (at least the
last few major versions), though from memory this does still include the
string 'Opera' as well.

So very true.

Have a background sound with pop music, say, Britney Spears. That
should send them elsewhere expeditiously.

Well, that is easy way to make sure to have mostly Opera users. After
all, it is much harder to turn of sound in webpages on other browsers...

I have no sound here at all in any browser. Of course I don't have
speakers...

I believe the (javascript) test

if (window.opera)

evaluates as true for opera regardless of user agent settings. Of course,
they can simply turn off javascript...
There is no 100% guaranteed way to block any particular user agent, since
most browsers have a way to spoof that string. You can block opera users who
don't know how to disable script with the above, last I checked.

Though why you'd want to do such a thing now is beyond me. They've fixed the
worst of their issues. I haven't blocked Opera since v6 when they had an
issue with returning true for an object they didn't properly support, thus
completely breaking everything I scripted.
I've also decided that it isn't my fault if my stuff doesn't work because the
UA itself is broken or out of date (opera 6, netscrape 4, AOL...). Too bad,
so sad. Let the users ask me why my stuff doesn't work, and I can tell them
to complain to the browser folks or get a decent browser.
