Google is not a governement. Google doesn't care what you do in your
spare time. What they do care about is how they can put an
advertisment next to it.

For now anyway... there have been several issues already... scanning
mail for content,

That's not an issue, Google is clear about this automatic scanning. No
humans involved.
Yet!

Hhmmm... for some reason I'm thinking DMOZ here.

Google is larger then Google.com you know.

Because those agencies have already stuff like that running? They just
tap the Internet.
Exactly... but think ahead!

So what else is new?
My site ;-)

But underestimating things is what bring about unforeseen problems. You
choose to ignore and you know what, that's fine by me! ;-)

Ah, yeah, those terrorists really have a hard time finding those objects
otherwise. I mean, to blow up some things in London you really need
Google...

Today resolution is ok, but tomorrow it will get better. At best
privacy within the walls of your own home is all that remains, that
is, if you do not use modern technologies... ...what's next, infrared?
Heat seeking? Info on each house, displaying full address and
personal info? It is not unthinkable you know...

Yup, and today, you have to go to the town and ask the neighbours. If
someone wants the info, he/she gets it.
No... you try to simplify and minimize what I'm saying... you're obviously
in love with your favorite crawler (google that is).

Go back a handfull of years... having satellite pictures would brand you a
spy... people died over such matters!

The neighbour thing... See I do not understand why you mention this, I agree
that if you really want something you can get it. But (before technology
allowed) for most of us this would take resources... common people do not
have these... they don't just jump over the border to find a suitable target
or go out to look in someone backyard.

It's about putting thing in perspective... not so long ago you would be in
trouble if you were able to collect and store the information you're able to
find today... add another couple of years... could everyone be tapping into
live satelitte feeds? Phone taps? The ability to have a peek through each
and every camera that can be foun on the streets worldwide?

Where does it stop for you? Surely there must be a line somewhere they
should never cross?

Quote:
today the can find
you by tracing IP or who knows what else ... they can already point
out where you live... maybe add some info from your ISP or other place
that collects these data... put two and two together and bingo! Just
a matter of time before you would be able to track your own car and
thus someone elses online, live...

Consider for a moment how fast things evolved, where will you be in
the next 20-30 years?

Having blind faith in these things thinking all and everything will be
ok or turn out for the best would be fairly naive.

Thinking it is only *now* possible, thanks to Google, that's naive.
Allright... so tell me then, before the internet and the searchengine era in
general... what would have been your options to (for the argument) find out
more about me? And why would you want to?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against progress here, I make use of what is
available myself! But that doesn't mean I have to 'surrender' my info
and/or privacy just to gain that extra visit does it?

Read some sci-fi. As soon as these things become a real problem,
someone will market a solution.

LOL!! Don't know why as trust me the terrorist already have that info or
they know how to gain it. Google is only using info that was already out
there and able to get. It isn't their technology. Also coordinates of
longitude and latitude is already given on most maps for military
installations.
Maybe pertinent to remind us all here that Mr. Stacey is in the
military.

There are ways to mask an IP.

Shoot the phone book has been out for years, also you can gain info about
anyone by having it looked it up with some agencies. Had a report done for
my daughter as she needed it for her job when she went on a cruise ship. The
best way for anyone to hide is have an unlisted phone #, tell the PO not to
give out your address
No problem here; the PO can rarely actually find my address now...

suppose to be working undercover sort of speak and making computer programs

Yes, I actually considered using the term "big brother" in a middle age
crisis (investor relations). I am still reluctant to say bad things about
that company though.

Exactly. If someone crashed a plane into skyscrapers and also had a GMail
account, do you really think that the FBI would avoid penetrating datacen-
tres in order to identify accomplices?

Does anyone know these 3-D maps which Google are constructing deriving in
San Francisco? They are using laser beams to get coloured polygons with a
very high level of detail.

They already plan to do the same in other big cities, potentially with the
intent of worldwide coverage. Google's 3-D maps are an extension of ideas
from Satellite Maps, which currently, under Google Earth (Keyhole) do not
look realistic if you look from certain angles.

Surfaces are not truly flat and also the resolution is coarse as data
comes from satellites. Will Google deploy some surveillence cameras too?
It is, after all, a "cool idea". Find your favourite spot in Google
Maps/Earth; then, have a look at some live cameras in the area. If that
does not worry you, I don't know what would. With perverts and stalkers
out there, that's the last thing humanity needs. A big brother with a big,
God-like eye that is available as a Web service to all.

I totally agree.

You probably already did that, if we wanted to collectively start
getting seriously in your case. I doubt you'd be to hard to find from
what you've already given up.
