Default Yahoo <=> MSN? - 11-05-2004 , 04:16 AM

Wonders of wonders, my little homeowners association site got picked up by
Yahoo and my tweaks snagged the #1 slot for the most likely keyword string.

But here's the interesting thing ...

MSN took down the freebie "submit a URL" thingie, but there is a "Help us
improve" link at the bottom of the search results page. From that feedback
form I spoke as a regular visitor and pointed out the keyword string
neglected to pull up anything related to my site. I suggested they add the
site to their indexing.

Now I also have the #1 slot over at MSN.

Both Yahoo and MSN seemed to have indexed on the same date which makes me
wonder if MSN is using Yahoo's database, or vice versa.

And what about Google you ask?

Still nothing but some ancient cached items.

Wow, now there's something we didn't know on this newsgroup.

Look a plea to all the hundreds of newbies who jump in here with their
little gems of advice. Reading the newsgroup a bit before posting and
use groups.google.com to do a bit of research.

When you hang around any particular newgroup VOLUNTARILY for any
length of time you have to expect and accept newbies and newbie
questions.

My most humble apologies for being an unenlightened neophyte with respect to
MSN and Yahoo. I actually do search around the newsgroups and sites for
information before posting. It just so happens I have not found anything
definitive as to whether or not MSN uses Yahoo's database.

I'll try very hard to not piss in your sandbox any further, but no
guarantees.

Don't worry about it. Post whatever you want

I've been involved with various newsgroups for years, and there's always
someone out to be critical of 'newbie' postings

Ignore them. Let them waste their time

Most newsgroup contributors want to help

Thanks for your info regarding MSN and Yahoo. Many readers won't have been
aware of that

Pete

Although a relative newbie in this NG, I have been on the 'Net since before
it became a mainstream item. Yes there certainly does seem to be at least
one subscriber in every NG that believes their excrement does not stink.
They are quick to flame on. Perhaps David Off is a victim of such attacks in
other NGs, or maybe he just didn't get laid last night, and he's venting his
frustration. Maybe he has been in his profession far too long and could
benefit from an extended vacation. He might not even be aware of his
personality disorder. Speculation abounds. Only his analyst knows for sure.

Absolutely, the overwhelming majority of NG participants have a genuine
desire to help others and demonstrate this by freely sharing their
knowledge. (And of course let us not forget the trolls that seem to lurk
everywhere.)

My query was legitimate though. There were at one time two separate
submission channels: one for MSN and another for Yahoo. That gave the
impression the two operate on separate databases. MSN's current search page
(and the "new and improved" one) does not give any credit to Yahoo further
strengthening the premise. The various sites I researched prior to posting
this thread also seemed to indicate MSN and Yahoo were separate from each
other.

What prompted the query was that the search results (and timing of the index
update) yielded virtually identical lists.

I am thinking that David was referring to some other threads over the
past couple of days, and a just a few hours prior to your posting,
where it has been shared that while MSN is in BETA that they were also
using Yahoo's index for their result pages listings.

Yes, they are separate from each other although MSN is currently
borrowing Yahoo's index - and will probably be more separate once MSN
is fully out of BETA.

:-) "Insult" is such a harsh description. I prefer "speculative
observations."

I'll try to be a bit more attentive to the other conversations. Thanx for
confirming my suspicion.

Call it what you wish - intention was the same behind the words.
*shrug*

No problem.

Carol
okay we can all calm down now, a belated welcome to the group MyndPhlyp.
I didn't mean to beat up on you in particular but as you will know from
nettiquette the good functioning of groups relies a bit on people
lurking before posting questions.

Sorry if I was a bit too tetchy with you.

regards,

David
