Default XHTML and SE - 10-13-2003 , 04:07 PM

Would using xhtml affect rankings in the SE

this page http://www.uk-piano.org/music/looking_for_music.html

the page only gets 2 submission on adv now compared with 6 a day this
time last year the page moved over to XHTML in Jan our PR has also
dropped form 7 to 6 this was around Feb

Yet the PR is bigger than sites that are above it

I don't have any evidence either way but providing the code is correctly
written I do not believe it should have impact upon search engines.

That is what I thought but the pages on the site with xhtml seem to be
dropping SERPs

A search engine is not checking upon your document type, be it XHTML or
something else. If you serve XHTML as XML then yes, that would
certainly change things. XHTML served as HTML however does not. And no,
I don't have proof. But my sites are all in XHTML and I don't have any
problems and do increase my PageRank. I would however bet a large
amount of money that if I would change any of my XHTML to an HTML
doctype, that this alone would not result in any PR-change. All this is
of course only related to XHTML written downwards-compatible, as
suggested by the W3C.
