I read this "For many people, the true value of the $299 a year cost of a
Yahoo listing isn't the clicks from Yahoo, but the boost in their rankings
on Google." in http://www.selfpromotion.com/search-...optimization.t is
this correct or rubbish?

You will need to look at the Google PR of the yahoo directory page on which
your entry would be listed. That would be the backlink. It is up to you
whether or not you consider it worth $299. You would also get clicks from
the directory itself of course.

Probably not but apparently even Google recommend getting a listing in
Yahoo if you're having trouble getting into Google. Dunno how true it
is though.

Some businesses have said they done well paying out the money for the
listing in Yahoo Directory BUT, and the but is the important part, not
for the "boost in their rankings on Google" but due to people actually
using the Directory and becoming a client or customer of theirs.

PR from Yahoo Directory, in my opinion, would be low amount due to how
they handle the pages in terms of links shared and such. Especially
when you look at the PR of the inner pages of the sections and then
the number of links already shared on those pages. I don't know if the
link handling is set up to share PR even ...

Most gain I can see is being that Yahoo Directory is still sorta kinda
regarded as an authority site/directory - not like it was 2 or 4 years
ago though.

So - in my opinion, optional and only if you think you will recoup the
money by getting some clients or customers through Yahoo Directory.
But I wouldn't view it from an SEO angle on making that decision -
purely the business angle of "is it worth it? Can I make back the $300
plus a little more?"

Back before the Florida update and when Google's results where in Yahoo I
felt that the directory had some to do with the rankings as some of the
sites were in top positions. But, my cat in the Yahoo directory has a
whopping 8 sites on it. 2 of them are mirror sites. This mirror site use to
be in the top listings in Google. It is now the 34th position. But, the 1st
2 results in Yahoo match the 1st 2 in the index for rag rugs. So, I would
say yes for Yahoo and all of Yahoo's mirror SE's, but not for Google. Oh and
one site is not online anymore in the Yahoo Directory for rag rugs...they
need to update their directory. :-)
