Default Sitemaps - 04-10-2006 , 05:51 AM

Me again.
:-)

I have been trying to find out how to make a sitemap, and looking at other
sitemaps, but haven't acvtually found anything that tells me simply what to
do. Then I downloaded something called Xenu sleuth link checker, to use it
to check my links, and once it had done that it gave me a sitemap. It had
duplicated a number of pages, and had them in a funny order, so I have used
that as the basis for my sitemap. http://www.africanbush.co.za/sitemap.htm

Is there a sitemap boffin out there who will tell me if what I've done is
correct? Somewhere there was reference to having one for google and one for
users... care to elucidate?

Thanks,

Catherine (who's learning fast)

users perfer a normal readable sitemap like:

Going back to the layers thing (BB, who is still catching up) go
download this

http://www.price-media.demon.co.uk/cascade.html

knock up a model of what you want your page to look like and then
swipe the code and twiddle it till you get what you want. This is a
good way to learn things, find code that approximates what you want
and then swipe it and fiddle around. With this utility, the best I've
come across, you get to easily create for yourself code similar to
what you want, saves hunting around for it.

On sitemaps, yeah, I use Xenu, always have. You can get so much for
free if you know where to look. Google sitemaps are indeed something
else again. Probably the best are xml, everyone has their own ideas
about this. mine is that I'm not really bothered.

More on sitemaps....

I duly received from somewhere an xml generated version of my sitemap for
google. Since I've never had anythig to do with them, I just cut and pastes
it, and uploaded the file as is. Is there someoen who knows enough to tell
me if this is correct, or if I need to change anything.

Since the file is for the search engine, and not for humans, I'm not at all
sure what it should look like. http://www.africanbush.co.za/sitemap.xml

Thanks,

Catherine

Have you just uploaded it, or did you sign for a sitemaps with Google?
Just having the files on your site doesn't mean anything.

https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login

Right down there are links to sitemaps description. Read them.

Are you reallly going to change all pages on the daily basis?

<changefreq>daily</changefreq>

You may delete these, as they are not used:

And more again....
I received the generated sitemap from http://www.nodemap.com/ and then
validated it using http://www.nodemap.com/

Both very handy. Now we just have to wait to see what Google reports.

If it's the one that's up there now, it has no PRIORITY tags and all
the LASTMOD tags are set to yesterday's date.

Not much use to anyone.

Ooops... just noticed I put the same url for both actions, and it was a
different one for one of them. Since nobody was able to help me with regard
to the sitemaps I posted what I've learned... please explain to me why it's
of no use to anyone? And what to do to fix that? And why the lastmod tag
being yesterday (which is still today here) should be different?

Thanks,

Catherine
