The number of referrals I get (related to rank) was axed by about a half last
week. It was an overnight change which had no clear justification as I had
changed nothing. Number of indexed pages has not changed either. Has
*yours*? Also, could this somehow be related to your recent Google Cache
woe? If the bar was greyed out, that would be another scenario altogether. I
still see FirstPeople < http://www.firstpeople.us/ > at PR5, so I assume
you're alluding to a front page of another site.

Hi Roy

last week. It was an overnight change which had no clear justification as I
had changed nothing.

I've no idea of mine as I never check. Or know how to.
As it's none commercial, i've never worried about such things,

This can be helpful, trust me. AWstats has a rudimentary mechanism for
per-search engines breakdown to and a monthly aggreagtion of numbers, which
you can view every morning/evening/whatever. Visitors (0.6, Dmitri
recommended it) gives a daily Zeitgest of Google referrals, which are rather
important to me as they account for 20% of all traffic. Again, it's
non-commercial, but if the referrals are there (and tracking of the numbers
can flag mistakes or -- contrariwise -- doors to success), why not use it?

There is another factor which is how many pages were indexed as opposed to
"made available", i.e. uploaded. The more pages you have, the lower the
PageRank, although it is dependent on front page structure (off- and on-site
links). Doorway-like front page can pull a lot of 'energy'.

Example (oops! wrong keys pressed earlier):

http://ppewww.ph.gla.ac.uk/~flavell/aflavell.html (from the HTML newsgroups)

PageRank is 8, only 47 inbound links.

It's PR5 over here, probably owing to datacentres. Try MCDar and see what
different datacentres report as the PageRank.

Best wishes,

Roy

There's some stuff going on over here, as well. Nothing like a full-scale
PageRank update, but there are odd changes. This appears to be something
more global...

MCDar apepar to be overloaded with requests (it is slow), which may be yet
another indication the people are discovering changes.

Best wishes,

Roy

I use smarterstats. Sorry, I was confusing it with something else -
esp when you said it was related to ranking.

Most of my traffic comes from google.

Yes, but adding a few deeper pages to a site that is already 4800+
isn't going to do much - if anything.

The two sites that I run, before the last update were both PR4.
First People moved up to PR5.

Today, both are showing PR4 again (at my end)

So, *may be* they are reverting back as there may have been other
problems.

As google had to sell more shares the other day, may be they had to
sell some of the PR from sites
