Default alphabetised keywords? - 03-17-2005 , 10:30 AM

overture keyword listings are presented alphabeteised e.g.

"hire limousine manchester"

does it matter what order a page is optimised in as im confised as to wether
"limousine hire manchester" will give a better or worse result than the
alphabetsied one given by overture

when i search i typically use "term term location" e.g. "web design leeds"
but thats just me...

any thoughts

I do the same when I analyse my access_log, and that's just one way to
group things like:

manchester hire limousine
limousine hire manchester

etc.

Pick the most natural. If you check your access_log you can group the
search queries and see which one is used the most.

The query you gave looks not natural. Use the one with the most natural
feel.

Well, you can probably guess what's the most natural one. Look after 2
weeks at your access_log and if you see one kind of ordering pop up more
often you can change to that one. On the other hand, if you wait 2 more
weeks you can see a different ordering coming up :-D.

That only works if you already get traffic from all the different
search phrases to start with. I made this error at first and lost out
on lots of traffic because I looked at the SERPs from my logs rather
than research.

Get yourself access to Wordtracker and see what your potential
visitors are really searching for.

From Wordtracker-

web site design leeds 9 7
leeds web design 7 6
leeds professional web design 4 3
web design companies in leeds 4 3

That's all the search phrases using the three words web, design and
leeds.

As you can see it's not a lot of traffic and the best one is- web site
design leeds.

A search for Web Leeds gives-

web site design leeds 9 7
leeds web design 7 6
live web cams millenium square leeds 5 4
leeds professional web design 4 3
web design companies in leeds 4 3
leeds castle offical web 2 2
leeds web designers 2 2
leeds web developers 2 2
university of leeds web connection 2 2
web cam - leeds 2 2

From this sort of research you can tell which SERPs are worth putting
serious effort into and which aren't. You can't tell this from your
logs since you'd need to be doing very well in the search engines to
start with to be able to do any meaningful analysis and even then if
you over looked an important phrase when optimizing your site and
links you wouldn't have any data on that and related SERPs.

For example above there is the SERP leeds web developers, not exactly
high traffic :-) but if you didn't optimize a page for the word
developers you are highly unlikely to see any traffic for SERPs using
the word developers and so your logs wouldn't suggest optimizing for a
SERP like leeds web developers.

Of course, but Google only looks for exact the same order if one uses ""
and I doubt that many people look for "web design leeds".

But putting web design first it will give prominence to that phrase....which
is what the site's final goal...to be in the top positions for web design.

I already stated: use the most natural order. And yes, people looking
for web design in leeds probably use:

web design leeds

and very unlikely:

web leeds design

or

leeds design web

But that doesn't mean that he can't be on the first SERP for all three
of them.

True, but if the person just concentrated on *web design* only it would be
better. Then all they would have to do is mention Leeds a couple of times
and they would probably get those 3 smaller SERP's.

Why not just on web? Or design for that matter?

If I wanted to have mainly customers from Leeds I would make sure that
Leeds and web design comes up very high.

Who knows.
