Default a service site's woes - 03-06-2004 , 12:29 PM

After reading many of the posts regarding the new Google and Yahoo
"requirements" it appears that my site, www.mollyjones.com, which offers
3000+ links in an effort to assist/educate other dog owners, will never be
ranked where anyone could find it.

Is this really the case?

Do I really need to pay these SEs? I don't make a nickel from this site, in
fact as all of you know, it costs me money.

I thought, somewhat naively perhaps, that I was doing something good by
creating a site where one could get answers to most canine related
questions. Apparently that's not good enough, huh?

Bill,

Your post is a bit "poor me" :-)

Your site is not optimized and that is why you don't rank well.

You need to;

1.) post here and learn how to fix your site
2.) get at least 50 in-bound links from related sites to yours (preferably
with a page rank or 4/10 or better)
3.) Build TITLE and META tags that TARGET your keyphrases that you want to
rank well for.
4.) Fix some small things like anchor text issues.

For starters, this is your TITLE tag;

<TITLE>Molly Jones. Nobody Knows Dogs Better! A one-stop resource site for
everything canine.</TITLE>

Who is going to search for the words "Nobody Knows Dogs Better!"...NOBODY!,
so why include it in your TITLE tag. Place it in your DESCRIPTION Tag if
you must...but keep the TITLE tag to the point. Do you want to rank well
for "Molly Jones"? Decide what you want to target and then use the keywords
or phrase in your TITLE tag....and nothing else.

By looking at your site, I cannot tell what keywords you want to be well
ranked for...so a SE spider surely will not be able to.

Also, outbound links really don't help you rank better (some do, but 3000
will probably just dilute the page rank on the pages they are on).

ALSO!!!! Once you get you rkeywords/keyphrases down pat, make sure you
change all of your "HOME" links to include the keyword text. For instance,
if you decide on the words "dog goodies" then instead of "HOME" as a link
from all of your pages back to the home page, use "dog goodies".

Read the posts at this group and carefully try some of the things mentioned
and you will get to where you want to go.

I would not worry about paying for inclusion until you get you site
optimized well and ranking in Google and Yahoo for free.

That is where the vast majority of your traffic will come from anyway.

Best of luck.

Not my case.... my site have over 9600 external hyperlinks and it is doing
OK.
Most of my keywords are on page 1 or 2 on google, MSN and Yahoo.
(I have never paid a penny...)
I have position # 31 on Yahoo of 472 000 000 pages...

Ten months ago I didn't know what "html" means :-) ....
Thanks to this NG I have learned a lot.
So don't give up.
When I started I had read somewhere a question from newbee "how to make his
position on SE better".
Somebody replied: "Read, read and read until your eyes will bleed, and than
use it".
So I did. Six hours a day after day after day...
....and thanks to the people of this NG...

Good luck.

Thank you very much for all the good advice. I wil try to learn as much as
I can from this NG. It's a little difficult at times for a newbie because
the vocabulary is so technical. You might find that statement a little odd,
but trust me, not everyone reading this NG understands all the acronyms and
language the experts here use.
